Few families have had more colourful or more pervasive an influence on the arts than the Lamberts - or led more blighted, self-destructive lives. George Lambert, the son of a Baltimore railway engineer, was born in St. Petersburg, grew up in the outback, served as a war artist in Palestine and Gallipoli, and established himself as Australia's lesding painter. Immortalised by Anthony Powell in 'A Dance to the Music of Time'. His son Constant was the first English composer to be commissioned by Diaghilev, a founder of the Sadler's Wells Ballet, a champon of jazz, the quintessential Fitzrovian and Edith Sitwell's collaborator on 'Facade'. Kit Lambert, the 'Svengali of rock and roll', managed The Who, started Britain's first successful independent record label, ruined his life with heroin and, it was rumoured, was eventually murdered.
