MOON, CHRIS
One Step Beyond (Signed Copy)
London, Macmillan. 1999, First. (ISBN: 0333740513). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine Dustjacket which is not price-clipped. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. SIGNED to title page with 'Bestest' with no dedication and dated 1 December 2000. 388 pages, 29 illustrations. Ex soldier Chris Moon missed the challenge of military life and applied to join the mine-clearance programme organised by the HALO Trust (Hazardous Areas Life Support Organisation). He was stationed first in Cambodia, where he and two other colleagues were kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge and faced execution but managed not only to negotiate himself out of his own execution but also that of his two colleagues. In 1995 he was blown up in a supposedly safe area of a minefield in remote Mozambique losing an arm and a leg. He survived initially because he treated himself. About fourteen hours after he was injured he arrived in South Africa where doctors said they'd never seen anyone live with such a small amount of blood. He recovered three or four times faster than was expected and after rehabilitating himself within a year after leaving hospital he ran the London Marathon, raised significant sums to help disabled people in the developing world and successfully completed a full time Masters Degree. Chris taught himself to run and is believed to be the world's first amputee ultra distance runner. In 1997 completed the gruelling Marathon De Sables. Since then he's run the world's toughest ultra marathons and most recently the Badwater Death Valley 135 mile Ultra, where the temperature averaged over 50 degrees Celsius. He did this and took 12 hours off his previous best time to complete it in 41 hours 51 minutes. L. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author.

ORMROD, RICHARD
Una Troubridge - the Friend of Radclyffe Hall
London, Jonathan Cape. 1984, First Edition. (ISBN: 0224021796). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xviii + 340 pages. 30 illustrations. When Una Troubridge (1887-1963) died at the age of 76 part of the inscription she had instructed her executors to put on her coffin read: Una Vincenzo Troubridge, The Friend of Radclyffe Hall. It is clear that Una considered that the most significant thing she had done in her life was to dedicate herself body and soul from the age of 28 to 'John' Radclyffe Hall, as lover, companion, comrade in arms, secretary and, latterly, nurse. For this she effectively relinquished husband, child, mother, friends and social approval. It is a love story as compelling as the Brownings and, strangely, little has been written about either of the central characters. What we know about the author of The Well of Loneliness has come from Una, while Una has until now remained an enigma. Yet she was a gifted singer, the only sculptor for whom Nihinsky ever sat and Colette's first English translator. Born Margot Elena Gertrude Taylor, she was nicknamed Una by her family as a child and chose the middle name Vincenzo herself, after her Florentine relatives. She married Captain Ernest Troubridge in October 1908; they had one daughter, Andrea. Ernest Troubridge rose to the rank of admiral during and immediately after the First World War, and Una gained her title when Admiral Troubridge was knighted in June 1919, although they were already legally separated at the time. OVERBYE, DENNIS
Einstein in Love - a Scientific Romance
London, Bloomsbury. 2001, First. (ISBN: 0747553238). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. xv + 416 pages. No figure towers over the intellectual landscape of the 20th century more compellingly than Albert Einstein. This is the first biography of the great physicist to focus on his life during the first two decades of the century, when he invented relativity, with its elastic view of space and time, and first glimpsed the quantum chaos in the heart of atoms. Despite his brilliance, he was also a young man in love - not only with the exhilarating vistas of physics, but with the extraordinary woman who was to become his first wife. Mileva Maric was a brooding and gifted Serb mathematician who was intellectual collaborator and emotional adversary. Drawing upon hundreds of unpublished letters and a decade of research, Overbye reveals Einstein as a self-styled bohemian, a poet, a violinist and a self-confident, charismatic whirlwind who left personal and professional turmoil in his wake. PEPPERALL, R.A.
Emigrant to Australia
London, Latimer House. 1948, First Edition. Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Silver title on blue cloth boards which are clean and unmarked with no wear but with a small amount of fading to spine head. Internally there is light foxing to closed edges and a touch to endpapers else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has some chipping, small closed tears, wear to edges and is not price clipped. After the First World War, just as after that of the Second World War, the economic situation in Great Britain was difficult. Thousands of young men, newly released from the armed forces anxious to launch themselves afresh, found themselves hampered and frustrated, and in desperation turned their thoughts to the Dominions overseas. The author was one of that generation, a professional soldier, yet now retired from the Indian Army, who emigrated to Australia in 1923. Of Australia and of farming he knew nothing, settling down to a life wholly strange to him. How did he fare? With what unexpected problems and difficulties did he have to cope? What lessons does his experience offer to those who would like to emigrate? A fascinating tale of an early emigrant and of farming in Australia. 1. Very Good/Good.
