JOSEPHS, JEREMY
Dr. Jack - Calcutta's Pavement Doctor
London, Bloomsbury. 1991, First Edition. (ISBN: 0747508909). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small printing mark to the inner margin of two pages) with non price clipped dustjacket which has a little wear to one corner tip. Foreword by Ben Kingsley. In the backstreets of Calcutta, shielded from the scorching heat by a tattered tarpaulin, mothers clutching semi-conscious, emaciated babies, and adults and children with missing or gangrenous limbs or suffering from tuberculosis or leprosy, queue in their hundreds to see Dr. Jack Preger. His 'clinic' has survived despite official disapproval and he has treated over 20,000 destitute and dispossessed street people. Born and brought up in an orthodox Jewish family in Manchester, he converted to Catholicism and qualified as a doctor in 1972 and immediately left to set up a clinic in Bangladesh, being deported after seven years after exposing a government masterminded racket involving the illegal export of babies. Undeterred he set off again to begin his now legendary work in Calcutta. 14 illustrations C3D. Near Fine/Near Fine.

Ever since Dame Thora Hird breathed life into the role of the author's mother in 'Wide-Eyed and Legless' she had been on at him to write a play based on the sequel 'Lost for Words' but his duties as official guide dog to his blind wife, the writer Aileen Armitage, being at the beck and call of their cats, a somewhat bemused vole and a tap dancing squirrel, and having a book to write, the screenplay took a back seat. Dame Thora kept at him and when she was 86 the script was finally finished and 'Lost for Words' was televised in January 1999 when she was 87. In this book he describes the experience of seeing at close hand his book, and an important part of his life, turn into a film amid the chaos of his private world. B2A. Near Fine/Very Good. However her lifestyle was closer to the servants of the past rather than the aristocrats, as at one time an army of servants kept the house in order, but now only a handful of staff provide the same service for its thousands of visitors. In this memoir she reveals what goes on behind the scenes not only of Felbrigg Hall but of stately homes all over the country. NOT EX LIB D4E. Near Fine/Near Fine.
