ROBERTS, NIGEL
C-Six - Ten Years As the Doctor of the Qe2
London, Sidgwick and Jackson. 1988. (ISBN: 0283996722). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED BY AUTHOR 'NIGEL ROBERTS QE2' without dedication. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from age darkening to page edges). English dustjacket is Fine and price clipped ALSO includes the Japanese dustjacket which is also Signed twice on the inner front flap, once in gold ink with Yokohama '89, and a blind embossed stamp on inner front flap 'purchased on board the Queen Elizabeth 2'. The rear of the Japanese dustjacket shows the QE2, Concorde and 9 planes. xxix + 226 pages. 38 illustrations. First reprint November 1988 (first was September). The author was Chief Medical Officer on the QE2 and other great Cunard ships for 12 years, responsible for the health of almost 3,000 passengers and crew. C-Six is the C stairway on 6 deck, positioned, as most ships' hospitals are, directly on the waterline at the centre of the ship to afford maximum stability and comfort, hence ironically but appropriately the address of the world most prestigious sick bay. These memoirs contain, naturally, medical emergencies, tales such as dentistry on a celebrity drunk, stories of chronic seasickness, acute appendicitis, drownings and a coronary in the casino. There is a large social side to his duties as he hosts a table slightly lower down from the Captain's, and his anecdotes about passengers are both affectionate and amusing. It is also an insight into how the systems of such a ship spring into action whenever a medical crisis arises. L. Near Fine/Fine. Signed by Author.

SISMAN, ADAM
The Professor and the Parson - a Story of Desire, Deceit and Defrocking
London, Profile. 2019, First. (ISBN: 9781788162111). Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. An As New unmarked copy with an As New dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 231 pages. 27 illustrations. One November day in 1958, the celebrated historian Hugh Trevor-Roper received a curious letter. It was an appeal for help, written on behalf of a postgraduate student at Magdalen College, who complained that he was being persecuted by the Bishop of Oxford. Curiosity piqued, Trevor-Roper agreed to see the man calling himself 'Robert Peters'. It was to be the start of an investigation he would pursue for the next quarter of a century. Beginning with the detailed dossier Trevor-Roper kept on Peters, Adam Sisman uncovers the extraordinary life of one of England's most eccentric conmen, a serial seducer, a fraud, a bigamist - and possibly the last Anglican clergyman to be formally defrocked . Though he lacked any academic qualifications, Peters succeeded in being appointed to teaching posts in universities from Colombo, Ceylon to Columbus, Ohio - and almost everwhere in between. Despite being didmissed, deported from country after country and repeatedly exposed in the press, Peters always bounced back - leaving a trail of destruction that included at least eight marriages, three prison sentences, an investigation by the FBI and a disastrous appearance on the TV programme 'Mastermind'. 168. BOURNE, STEPHEN AND BRUCE, ESTHER

London, Ethnic Communities Oral History Project. 1996, First Thus. (ISBN: 1871338123). Soft Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy in card covers. After the Second World War, many Black people travelled from the Caribbean and settles in Britain, but when Aunt Esther, a seamstress, was born in Fulham in 1912, only small Black communities existed in Britain. Aunt Esther's father, Joseph Bruce, raised her by himself. He was the son of Guyanese slaves, and a rare example of a Black man who settled alone in a white community at the turn of the century. Joseph and his daughter were accepted by their white neighbours, but away from Fulham the situation could be very different. A friendly, outgoing woman, Aunt Esther found it easy to integrate with the new multi-cultural society of post-war Britain, and she was happy to collaborate with her nephew, Stephen Bourne on her autobiography, hoping to add to the little documentation which exists to inform us of the pre-war Black community. First published in 1991, the book is a revised and updated version of Aunt Esther's Story and draws on interviews made after its original publication and includes many photographs not seen in the first edition.
