A Saint Among Savages
London, Collins. 1980, First Edition. (ISBN: 0002167409). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ unmarked copy with VG+ price clipped dustjacket. The book is about Rachel Saint, a missionary and the Auca Indians of the Amazon jungle in Eastern Ecuador. She knew that her brother and four companions had been killed by the tribe and that no white man nor Indian had ever made contact with them in their whole violent history, she knew that they had so little regard for life that they killed their wives and children on a casual whim. But she went fearlessly to live with them and taught them the meaning of love and how to live in peace. Map endpapers and numerous photographs by John Wright. 24. Very Good/Very Good.

LONGDEN, DERIC
A Play on Words
London, Bantam. 1999, First Edition. (ISBN: 0593044029). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page "With lots of love". First Edition, First Printing. A near Fine unmarked copy with VG+ complete dustjacket. Ever since Dame Thora Hird breathed life into the role of the author's mother in 'Wide-Eyed and Legless' she had been on at him to write a play based on the sequel 'Lost for Words' but his duties as official guide dog to his blind wife, the writer Aileen Armitage, being at the beck and call of their cats, a somewhat bemused vole and a tap dancing squirrel, and having a book to write, the screenplay took a back seat. Dame Thora kept at him and when she was 86 the script was finally finished and 'Lost for Words' was televised in January 1999 when she was 87. In this book he describes the experience of seeing at close hand his book, and an important part of his life, turn into a film amid the chaos of his private world. 156. Near Fine/Very Good. LONGFORD, ELIZABETH
A Pilgrimage of Passion - the Life of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1979, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297774883). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gold title on brown boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is some light foxing to fore and top edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. xi + 467 pages. 49 illustrations. Genealogical tree to endpapers of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt and of Lady Anne Blunt. Dustjacket has age darkening and is not price clipped. This definitive biography was commissioned by the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, after a ban of 50 years, allowing the use of unpublished papers and other material. Wilfrid Scawen Blunt was a great English eccentric - a writer, poet, diarist, politician, nationalist, rebel, explorer, co-founder of the Crabbet Arabian Stud, sportsman and Sussex squire, who in old age, seemed like a Prince from the Arabian Nights with his Bedouin robes, flashing eyes and flowing beard. His long life was in every sense a 'pilgrimage of passion' : he waged political crusades for the freeing of Egypt, India and Ireland from colonial rule and was the first Englishman to be imprisoned for Ireland; his desert journeys were spiritual quests as much as geographical expeditions; his romantic affairs were as passionate as his politics, before his marriage to Byron's granddaughter, Lady Anne Noel, he roamed the world as a handsome young diplomat and was once the lover of the famous courtesan 'Skittles'. Revered by a younger generation of poets, young enthusiasts for the East - T.E. Lawrence and St. John Philby - regarded him as a prophet, always calling on him before they went abroad, and Winston Churchill repeatedly visited him in his old age. ORMROD, RICHARD
Una Troubridge - the Friend of Radclyffe Hall
London, Jonathan Cape. 1984, First Edition. (ISBN: 0224021796). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xviii + 340 pages. 30 illustrations. When Una Troubridge (1887-1963) died at the age of 76 part of the inscription she had instructed her executors to put on her coffin read: Una Vincenzo Troubridge, The Friend of Radclyffe Hall. It is clear that Una considered that the most significant thing she had done in her life was to dedicate herself body and soul from the age of 28 to 'John' Radclyffe Hall, as lover, companion, comrade in arms, secretary and, latterly, nurse. For this she effectively relinquished husband, child, mother, friends and social approval. It is a love story as compelling as the Brownings and, strangely, little has been written about either of the central characters. What we know about the author of The Well of Loneliness has come from Una, while Una has until now remained an enigma. Yet she was a gifted singer, the only sculptor for whom Nihinsky ever sat and Colette's first English translator. Born Margot Elena Gertrude Taylor, she was nicknamed Una by her family as a child and chose the middle name Vincenzo herself, after her Florentine relatives. She married Captain Ernest Troubridge in October 1908; they had one daughter, Andrea. Ernest Troubridge rose to the rank of admiral during and immediately after the First World War, and Una gained her title when Admiral Troubridge was knighted in June 1919, although they were already legally separated at the time. 302. Emigrant to Australia
London, Latimer House. 1948, First Edition. Hard Cover, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Silver title on blue cloth boards which are clean and unmarked with no wear but with a small amount of fading to spine head. Internally there is light foxing to closed edges and a touch to endpapers else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has some chipping, small closed tears, wear to edges and is not price clipped. After the First World War, just as after that of the Second World War, the economic situation in Great Britain was difficult. Thousands of young men, newly released from the armed forces anxious to launch themselves afresh, found themselves hampered and frustrated, and in desperation turned their thoughts to the Dominions overseas. The author was one of that generation, a professional soldier, yet now retired from the Indian Army, who emigrated to Australia in 1923. Of Australia and of farming he knew nothing, settling down to a life wholly strange to him. How did he fare? With what unexpected problems and difficulties did he have to cope? What lessons does his experience offer to those who would like to emigrate? A fascinating tale of an early emigrant and of farming in Australia. 5. Very Good/Good.

First edition, first printing. When Lucy Pinney arrived in the lush Dorset countryside 30years ago she was newly married, very enthusiastic and charmingly naive. After a bucolic love-affair worthy of a Thomas Hardy novel, Lucy launched herself into pig keeping, cake baking and lamb rearing with gusto.
