The author begins her story in Rome, where her happy, simple life, studying and teaching the violin, was interrupted when World War II broke out. The nuns at her convent advised her to go to Switzerland or Spain, and she opted for Spain, where the main action in her true but almost unbelievable story takes place, just after the Civil War. Here her simple lifestyle, studying and teaching in a convent's cloistered conditions was suddenly to change as she became caught up in a Resistance operation dedicated to rescuing prisoners of war who had escaped over the Pyrenees after the fall of Free France. While engaged in this dangerous work she was arrested, imprisoned, and charged with high espionage. NOT EX LIB C3A. Fine/Fine.

One of Britain's most innovative comedians and arguably its most popular, he united the nation in laughter with Hancock's Half Hour, the show that established the situation comedy. But behind Hancock's success lurked a tendency to self-destruction that would compromise his later years. Prone to professional insecurity and a slave to perfection, he gradually detached himself from the writers, agents and actors who had played an essential role in his success. In this first full appraisal, on the fortieth anniversary of his death, Fisher sheds new light on Hancock's fall from grace, examining what went wrong and questioning whether his suicide was inevitable. JONES, DAVINA
Parallel Lives
Belfast, Appletree Press. 2005, First. (ISBN: 0862819636). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New copy in pictorial laminated boards in an As New dustjacket. First Edition, First Printing. 206 pages. An affectionate look at two very different lives lived in tandem but intertwined by country house life on the Ards Peninsula in County Down. Castle Ward (now held by The National Trust) and Ballywhite House stood on opposite sides of Strangford Lough but their owners and those who lived on the estates found that their idyllic lives were changed for ever by the advent of the Second World War. This remarkable biography of Colonel William Brownlow, `The Major', and Agnes White chronicles two very different lives. One was well known in Northern Ireland society, becoming Lord Lieutenant for County Down - a World War II veteran who campaigned for local issues and championed horse-racing and country sports. The other life was lived more quietly behind the scenes as a working mother and wife, chorister and talented amateur artist, but both were the faces of working lives well spent. All the more fascinating for being true.. As New/As New.
