ALLEN, CHARLES
The Prisoner of Kathmandu - Brian Hodgson in Nepal 1820-1843
London, Haus. 2015, First. (ISBN: 9781910376119). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 288 pages. 34 colour plates and numerous illustrations in the text. Posted to Kathmandu in 1820 as a junior political officer, Brian Hodgson found himself isolated and trapped in a fiercely xenophobic mountain kingdom that seemed bent on making war on the all-powerful British East India Company. For 23 years he struggled to keep the two sides apart. His legacy survives in the lasting peace and friendship between Britan and Nepal. At the heart of this biography is the Orientalist movement driven by the European Enlightenment, which inspired Hodgson and others to devote themselves to the exploration of Asian culture, leading Hodgson to study Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhism, and much else besides. BAKEWELL, JOAN

She describes what it was like to make her BBC television debut during the Cuban missile crisis; to be the only woman on 'Late Night Line Up', with its eclectic roster of guests; and to be dubbed 'the thinking man's crumpet'. Here, too, is how it felt to see her affair with Harold Pinter transmuted into his play 'Betrayal'. B2D. Fine/Fine.

PENROSE, BARRIE AND FREEMAN, SIMON
Conspiracy of Silence - the Secret Life of Anthony Blunt
London, Grafton Books. 1986, First Edition. (ISBN: 0246122005). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a few marks to top edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xix + 588 pages. 64 illustrations. Throughout the Second World War and the Cold War which followed, Britain's Secret Service was compromised by a group of privileged, Cambridge-educated Englishmen who consistently betrayed their country by working for Stalin's Russia. Two Sunday Times writers have investigated the astonishing story of Anthony Blunt and his accomplices, who included Burgess, Maclean and Philby. Their book shows how deeply the Blunt network penetrated the British Establishment on behalf of the Russians. Anthony Blunt, Keeper of the Queen's Pictures, friend of the royal family, Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, was born in Bournemouth in 1907, the son of an Anglican clergyman. This solid middle-class background made him an unlikely agent, but at Cambridge, after meeting Guy Burges, a fellow member of the Apostles (the university's elite intellectual society), Blunt became a communist and Russian spy. Daylight Must Come - the Story of Dr. Helen Roseveare

The most astounding part of her story is that, having endured terror, humiliation, rape and split-second escape from death, she would , after a few months back home in England, choose to return to resume her work in the Congo. Today, the central station she founded, with its flying doctors, teaching school and operating theatres, is unique in Africa. NOT EX LIB 21. Very Good/Good.
