(MARIE MADELEINE MOTIER)
Peguy and Les Cahiers de la Quinzaine
London, Dennis Dobson. 1946, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gilt title on blue cloth boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is a small name to front endpaper and light foxing to closed edges and endpapers else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good + copy. Dustjacket has light wear to edges, two small repaired closed tears and is not price clipped.232 pages. 5 illustrations. Translated from the French by Ruth Bethell. Charles Péguy (1873-1914) was a noted French poet, essayist, and editor, and Catholicism strongly influenced his works. It is remarkable that no book has yet been produced in England about Péguy, and this translation from the French fills the gap. It is a complete biography taking in the whole of Péguy's life from childhood to his death on the Marne in 1914, by a bullet to the forehead. The author was his friend and colleague for many years. 157. Very Good/Very Good.

ALTER, ROBERT (IN COLLABORATION WITH CAROL COSMAN)
Stendhal - a Biography
London, George Allen and Unwin. 1980, First Edition. (ISBN: 0049280422). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. xiii + 285 pages. 18 illustrations. Tracing the connections between the almost comic succession of failures in Stendhal's life and the enduring triumphs of his art, Robert Alter illuminates the process through which the writer's public and private experience fed into his great literary works. An engrossing and stylish critical biography which reveals how an unprepossessing and far from successful French minor official, born and raised in the provinces, and whose sense of society was shaped by the upheavals of pre- and post-Napoleonic Europe, should have become one of the most brilliant and imaginative of guides to the promises and pitfalls of sexual and worldly ambitions. BILLY, ANDRE
The Goncourt Brothers
London, Andre Deutsch. 1960, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gold title on orange boards which are unmarked with no wear. Internally there is age tonig to endpapers, a little light foxing to to and fore edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket has a repaired closed tear and light wear and is not price clipped. 351 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Translated from the French by Margaret Shaw. Jules and Edmmond de Goncourt were the most remarkable pair of collaborators in the history of literature. Their lives were dedicated to each other and to the art of writing, to the exclusion of anything else of importance. As novelists, they were pioneers of realism; their books, in which the single-minded serch for truth sometimes resulted in over-documentation, are seldom read today, but their influence on the development of novel-writing cannot be overestimated. The brothers also acted as guides to the aesthetic taste of their time, notably in their enthusiasm for the 18th century and for the art of Japan. But it is their journals in which they recorded in minutest detail the French literary scene of th 19th century, which have assured their immortality. 3. Very Good/Good.

FLAUBERT, GUSTAVE
Intimate Notebook 1840-1841
London, W.H. Allen. 1967, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped and has a repaired closed tear. 59 pages. Introduction, translation and notes by Francis Steegmuller. 'I go from hope to anxiety, from wild optimism to dreary negation; its rain and sun, but its a gilded cardboard sun and a misty rain with no storm.' These words were written by one of France's greatest writers, the future author of Madame Bovary, when he was 18 years old. At that time Gustave Flaubert was living with his parents in Rouen, dutifully following his father's wishes by studying to enter the Paris Law School. Fortunately, however, his true ambitions were distinctly literary, and it was to an ordinary schoolboy's copybook that Flaubert confided his earliest longings and most intimate thoughts. Passed on to Flaubert's niece as part of his literary estate, and presumed lost for over 80 years, in 1965 the text of this precious document was discovered in France, and published there for the first time. It was immediately greeted as an authentic candid portrait of Flaubert experiencing the first tremors of his future creativity. In this journal he reveals himself to be a romantic, fiercely self-doubting adolescent, simultaneously 'struggling with the flesh, swimming in philosophy, and trying to convince himself of his own faith in his literary vocation.' 160. Balzac and His World
London, W.H. Allen. 1967, First. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy with dustjacket which has chipping with some losses. xiv + 548 pages. Translated from the French by Derek Coltman. First British edition. The most thorough and definitive study of Balzac and La Comédie Humaine, written by one of France's leading contemporary novelists and playwrights. It is neither a biography nor a work of criticism as we know it; it is rather a guided visit, a voyage to the world of Balzac, an exploration of the works of a writer the author calls the most secret of novelists. It is, beyond that, an attempt to explain the creation of a great novel. Combining scholarship with the creative insights that only one novelist could bring to the work of another. MELCHER, EDITH
The Life and Times of Henry Monnier 1799-1877
Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University Press. 1950, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy which has a small name to front endpaper with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped. xiv + 253 pages. 19 illustrations. Versatile, gregarious Henry Monnier was so typical of the 19th century Paris of which he was a quasi-satirical exponent that this colourful biography takes the reader on delightful excursions into the mores of French life and the changing modes of thought during the Restoration, the July Monarchy, and the Second Empire. As lithographer and illustrator second only to Daumier among the satiric artists, he created that epitome of the bourgeois type, Monsieur Joseph Prudhomme, the French Babbitt. Monnier's realistic techniques as monologuist and character actor foreshadowed the later work of Antoine and the Théâtre Libre. As a writer he produced lifelike scenes of manners that influenced Balzac and the Realists, and possibly Flaubert. The diversity of his talents and variety of his friendships included Balzac, who admired him greatly, Mérimée, Eugène Sue, George Cruikshank, Gavarni, Dumas, Latouche. NOT EX LIB 24. OUSTON, PHILIP
The Imagination of Maurice Barrès
Toronto, University of Toronto Press. 1974, First Edition. (ISBN: 0802052746). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy which has a few specks of light foxing to fore edge.xviii + 307 pages. 3 illustrations. Dustjacket has a large tear at back which has been repaired. Maurice Barrès (1862-1923) was a French novelist, essayist, journalist, socialist politicianRomantic traveller, anti-Dreyfusard, religious syncretist, and pragmatist, and, with Charles Maurra, one of the most influential founders and exponents of modern French nationalism. His great originality among French political writers of the 20th century is to have conspicuously applied Baudelaire's 'Queen of Faculties' and the insights og post-Baudelarian Symbolism to the enterprise of committed literature, using a 'picturesque and musical' language of persuasion, 'without logic-chopping, syllogisms and destructions,' such as Baudelaire had first defined in 'Le Confiteor de l'artiste.' Philip Ouston traces the development of Barrès's ideas concerning the observed 'energetic' and 'constructive' functions of mytho-poetic imagination in the lives of individuals and the government of societies, investigates the techniques of persuasion and figures of rhetoric he evolved for the purpose of maintaining or reawakening the political and religious imagination of his contemporaries, and describes his own imagined world of private and public symbols from 'Le Culte du Moi' to 'Le Mystère en Pleine Lumière'. 2. TYLDEN-WRIGHT, DAVID
Anatole France
London, Collins. 1967, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket which has a very small repaired closed tear and is not price clipped. 344 pages. 7 illustrations and pictorial endpapers. Anatole France - born François-Anatole Thibault (1844-1924), was the son of a bookseller on the left bank, and the Paris he knew was the Paris of Monet and Renoir, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. Their genius has created a vision of the city, animated, stylish, intelligent, that forever expresses the Parisian spirit. Of that spirit Anatole France was almost the personification - his curiosity, his intellectual energy, his zest for life are reflected in the astonishing range of his literary achievement. Apart from his novels, he was one of the greatest literary journalists and critics in the history of France. He was the friend or acquaintance of almost every literary figure from the Goncourts, to the poets such as Verlaine and Leconte de Lisle, to Zola and Proust; he was in Paris during the siege and under the rule of the Commune; he survived to witness the suffering of the Great War, and the Dreyfus case involved him in politics.
