A Philosophical and Practical Treatise on Horses and on the Moral Duties of Man Towards the Brute Creation [Volume I].
London:, T.N. Longman,, 1796., First Edition, Hardcover. Octavo, just over 9 inches (23 cm) tall, in original green paper covered boards backed by green cloth spine with paper title label on spine. 391 pages plus a publisher ad for the future publication of volume II of this work "in the New Year". It would follow in 1798. This item is volume I only. A relatively scarce book and rare in original boards. The author wrote several books on livestock and farm animals and he consistently advocated the humane treatment of animals especially those used for food. Covers moderately edgeworn with corner rounded, irregular fading and spotting. The spine label looks remarkably fresh, readable with no loss of material. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on the front pastedown along with an old seller notation in pencil - "extremely scarce" - on the free endpaper. The front endpaper is open but the hinge is not shaken in the least. All edges of the text block are untrimmed leaving the exposed edges soiled. For all its grubby appearance, this is a solid, well preserved copy. Very Good.
