Amsterdam, Chez M. Magérus, Libraire, 1771. First Edition thus. Full Calf. Rare French Edition of the first compendium of fruit arboriculture with 39 folding copper-engraved plates in fine contemporary hand coloring. Two foolscap-folio volumes bound in one: [ii],160,[iv],161-205,[1], with 19 plates (quince, cherry, plum, fig, currant, almond, chestnut, apricot, and other fruits and nuts) and large woodcut tailpieces; [ii],339 [i.e. 139]pp, with 20 plates by Jacob Folkema and Jan Caspar Philips (showing 103 apple varieties and 82 varieties of pears, with such evocative name as red apple paradise, Queen of England, siren lemon, and Mrs. Thigh). Title and preface from the Leeuwarden edition of 1766 bound in between Rr2 and Ss. Elegantly bound in early mottled calf, spine richly gilt in seven compartments divided by raised bands, green morocco lettering piece gilt, edges stained red, plain period end papers. An excellent copy of a superb production, the only notable flaw being three plates and several quires, as well as end papers and fly leaves, evenly browned. Hunt 620. Nissen BBI 1077 and 1079. Landwehr (Dutch Books with Coloured Plates) 90 and 94. Bunyard, Guide to the Literature of Pomology, p. 439. Oak Spring Pomona, p. 131. Burnet III 681. Both titles often found bound together. First published at Leeuwarden, in Dutch, in 1758 (Nissen BBI 1077). Knoop was head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange at Marienburg and is considered, with Duhamel du Monceau, the father of pomology. Especially with the Pomologia, he broke new ground: Knoop was first to publish scientific explanations of apples and pears from Dutch, German, English and French regions. The book's many beautiful illustrations almost appear three-dimensional through the use of shadow effects. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. KOCH, Albrecht C. (1804-1867), [Sea Serpent] [Moby Dick] Reise Durch Einen Theil Der Vereinigten Staaten Von Nordamerika in Den Jahren 1844 Bis 1846 [a Trip Through a Part of the United States in the Years 1844 to 1846]
KOCH, Albrecht C. (1804-1867)
[Sea Serpent] [Moby Dick] Reise Durch Einen Theil Der Vereinigten Staaten Von Nordamerika in Den Jahren 1844 Bis 1846 [a Trip Through a Part of the United States in the Years 1844 to 1846]
Dresden und Leipzig, Arnoldische Buchhandlung, 1847. Quarter-Morocco. Scarce First Edition of this detailed account of a trip in search of the gigantic sea serpent, Zeuglodon. Text in German. Demy 8vo (225 x 145mm): [6],162pp, with frontispiece of dinosaur skeleton, hand-colored geological profile of the Gulf Coast, and advertisement leaf not mentioned in bibliographies. Recent quarter tan morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, end papers renewed. Toning to first and final few pages, scattered dust-soiling (especially to deckled edges), but a very presentable copy in fine binding. Howes K234, Sabin 38198. Buck 391, Flake 4676. Streeter 850. In 1844, Koch, an obscure paleontologist who had emigrated to the United States in 1826 from Saxony, began the remarkable journey recounted in this day-by-day record. Koch operated an archeology museum in St. Louis, in the 1830s and 1840s, while also excavating fossil skeletons throughout North America. In 1840, he discovered the skeleton of a mastodon, which he dubbed "Missourium" and exhibited (after adding vertebrae from other animals) in his museum before taking it on tour to the East Coast and Europe. The fraud was quickly discovered and criticized by scientists on both sides of the Atlantic, obscuring Koch's major accomplishment: he was first to pronounce the contemporaneity of the mastodon and humans in the Americas. His travels recorded here took him by land and water from Martha's Vineyard to New Orleans and Alabama in search of the Zeuglodon, which he finally found in Alabama, in 1845. He baptized the 114 feet-long skeleton "Hydrarchos" and showed it on Broadway, in New York. In the pamphlet that accompanied his exhibition Koch links the creature to the biblical accounts of Leviathan, an association that may have inspired Herman Melville's account of the fossil whale in Moby-Dick. London, printed for Bernard Lintott, between the Temple-Gates in Fleet-Street [through 1718], 1717. Full Calf. Three volumes in one: Fifth Edition of the first, Second of the second, First of the third. 8vo: [2, the frontispiece and title page may be cancels],vi (dedication to Henry, Duke of Kent, from The fruit-garden kalendar transferred here, as usual, to The clergy-man's recreation [ESTC Citation No. T30847]),[8],84, with a copper-engraved frontispiece by Simon Gribelin and a letterpress illustration; [18],115,[1], with a frontispiece, four folding plates (including the plate showing a method of finding the meridian line, often missing) and a letterpress illustration (in this edition [ESTC Citation No. T142272], the last '7' of the date on the title page falls below the first 't' of 'Lintott', and on p.5 the "B" of the signature is below the "a" of "acquainted" in the final line); [4],v,[1],146 (wanting final 3pp of the appendix, but with 7 extra pages of Lintot's catalog), [10]pp, with a folding copper-engraved frontispiece. Period Cambridge-style calf paneled in blind, very skillfully rebacked, spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in gilt, red leather lettering piece gilt. An excellent copy, the binding tight and secure, text generally clean and free of foxing, plates good impression, barring the first frontispiece, which is a bit weak. Henrey, 937, 939, and 943. Janson, pp. 149-155. Cagle 815, 816, and 817. The Clergy-Man's recreation, originally published in 1714, was Laurence's first published treatise on gardening, and was devoted almost exclusively to culture and training of fruit trees, and is of special historical interest, according to Henrey, for its early mention of transmission of a viruses by grafting. The gentleman's recreation, giving " some additional improvements and observation" relating to fruit trees followed in 1716, and The fruit-garden kalendar in 1718. The very practical nature of Laurence's treatises made them extremely popular, including with the colonists in America. N. B. [The Council] deposed the two existing pontiffs, who refused to cooperate, and elected a third, Alexander V. LESLIE, John (1736-1778); DYER, John (1699-1757)
Killarney: A Poem; [Bound with: ] the Fleece, a Poem. In Four Books [Ravensdale Park]
Dublin / London, Printed for William Wilson / Printed for R. and J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1772. Full Calf. First Editions of these two eighteenth-century poems in handsome contemporary binding with distinguished provenance. 4to (262 x 208mm): [8],50,2]; [4],156pp, with title page vignettes, list of subscribers, preliminary advertisement leaf, and final errata leaf; p. 49 misnumbered 94. Contemporary tree calf with large gilt armorial of T. G. Fortescue Esqr, Ravensdale Park to front and rear covers and engraved armorial book plate of Ella Park Lawrence and George Appleton Lawrence to front paste-down. A very handsome production in period boards, elegantly rebacked by Fitterer, securely bound and clean throughout. Rothschild 830 and Hayward 176 (for Dyer). Leslie's "wonder and delight" in the lakes, mountains, and woods of Killarney inspired his topographical poem (a second, octavo, edition appeared the same year, as did Phoenix Park, Leslie's only other published work). Two years earlier, William Gilpin had published his Observations on the River Wye, celebrating the picturesque in English landscape, and Killarney is one of the earliest Irish poems in that Romantic tradition. Dyer's pastoral on the woolen industry celebrates "Britain's commercial energies and depicts her social classes working harmoniously in a shared national purpose." (Cambridge Companion to Eighteenth-Century Poetry) Dyer claimed The Fleece was the favorite of his poems, even if Grongar Hill was the most admired. Like Philips's Cyder, The Fleece was modeled on Virgil's Georgics, running thousands of lines of blank verse. Dr. Johnson mocked it, though Wordsworth recognized its "living landscape," especially "those soft scenes thro' which [his] childhood strayed." (ODNB) Provenance: Descended from a distinguished Irish family from County Louth. Ravensdale Park was built in an austere Italiante style by the architect Thomas Duff of Newry for Thomas Fortescue, 1st Baron Clermont, an Irish Whig politician and historian of the ancient Fortescue family of twelfth-century Devonshire origins. Ella Park Lawrence (1857-1924) was regent of the Rebecca Park chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Eight of her ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, and during the Civil War her father ran an abolitionist newspaper. N. B. LEVER, Darcy (1760?-1839)
[Maritime] the Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor; or, a Key to the Leading of Rigging, and to Practical Seamanship
London, Printed for John Richardson, under the Royal Exchange; Black, Parry, and Kingsbury booksellers to the honourable East India Company; and William Heather, Leadenhall Street, 1808. Full Calf. Rare First Edition, second issue, of this key work on maritime and nautical procedures and equipment in the age of sail. Demy 4to (257 x 204): x,[2],120 pp, profusely illustrated with 110 engraved plates by the author and by William Butterworth of Leeds on 55 sheets showing 587 figures. Contemporary (or slightly later) brown calf spine in six compartments divided by raised bands, titled direct in gilt, covers framed in blind with rope roll; old ownership signature to title page, book plate of conservationist Frederick E. Ellis (1916-2010), of Shaw Island, Washington. A handsome example, soundly bound and generally clean throughout (pages and plates with occasional minor stains and browning, as often, and several neat old edge repairs). Maryne (Language of Sailing), p. 359. Apparently preceded by an issue printed in Leeds by Thomas Gil, with dedication to the Admiralty dated Leeds, 30 July, 1808. Lever's work became the standard text during the nineteenth century in England and America, offering precise explanations of the principles of rigging, full details of a ship's operation through the effect of the wind on its sails, tacking, use of the compass, casting, and much more. "Original in concept, it met with immediate success, and for the next forty years continued in steady use as a standard textbook for young officers of the Royal Navy and the merchant marine. The introduction states that the work was planned many years before and was then finished 'for the advantage of a young gentleman whose inclinations led him to the choice of a sea-faring life'." LISTER, Martin (1638?-1712), A Journey to Paris in the Year 1698
LISTER, Martin (1638?-1712)
A Journey to Paris in the Year 1698
London, printed for Jacob Tonson, at Gray's-Inn Gate next Grays-Inn Lane, 1699. Early Reprint. Full Calf. Third Edition (so stated) of this account of the author's travels to Paris, overflowing with observations of natural history collections, estates, and libraries, as well as commentary on science, art, food, wine, medicine, and more. Crown 8vo (185 x 115mm): [8,first leaf is blank],248pp, with 6 engraved plates (3 folding) of a wasp's nest, snails, a millipede, and a centipede. Early full speckled calf, spine richly gilt in five compartments divided by raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, edges speckled red. Engraved armorial bookplate of John Rolle, Baron Rolle of Stevenstone (1750-1842). An excellent example, sporadically scattered marginal foxing only, else a clean, crisp copy in handsome period binding. Wing L2527. Bibliotheca bibliographici 3046. ESTC R2460. Preceded by two editions published the same year. Late in 1697, Lister accompanied William Bentinck, Lord Portland, on a diplomatic mission to Paris as physician. "His duties left him ample time to meet and talk with other intellectuals, to see their collections and gardens, and to explore the city. He was there for six months and shortly after his return published A Journey to Paris in the Year 1698. The book ran to three editions within a year, but was lampooned by William King for its supposed triviality. In fact, it is a unique first-hand account of Parisian scientific society, and a useful description of the city and its life." (ODNB) N. B. London, printed for J. Wren, opposite New Exchange Buildings in the Strand; S. Crowder, H. Woodgate, J. Fuller, and J. Warcus, 1768. Early Reprint. Quarter-Calf. Fourth Edition of one of the "best of the English imitations of Robinson [Crusoe]." (Gove) 12mo: xii,263,[1]pp (wanting one quire, pp 83-86, provided in excellent facsimile on old paper), with hand-colored frontispiece and map. The final page is signed "Ed Dorrington," an invention of the publisher. Later quarter-calf over marbled paper-covered boards, marbled end papers. Near Fine or better, light finger-soiling and occasional small stain to text, manuscripts ex-libris to end papers and title page, otherwise excellent. Negley 1462. Gove, pp.262-68. Cox II, p.479 (citing Dorrington as author). Sabin 66952. Howgego V, L45. Ullrich, pp. 118-122. Charming hand-colored edition of this popular tale relating a fictitious British hermit's escape from apprenticeship and subsequent life on a deserted island off the Pacific coast of Mexico. First published serially in the Public Intelligencer, a weekly newspaper, then in book form in 1727, and eventually "rivalling Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, of which it is possibly the best imitation." (Howgego). The book's author remained anonymous until Arundell Esdaile discovered a rare edition of 1727 in which the dedication is signed Peter Longueville, to whom the work is now attributed. Gove cites a number of literary allusions, attesting to the tale's popularity. Among these are Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit, in which John Westlock complains that his chambers are "nothing but . the sort of impromptu arrangement that might have suggested themselves to Philip Quarll or Robinson Crusoe." See also Gove, quoting Bonner, that the author "transferred many passages unblushingly from Dampier [A New Voyage Round the World]." N. B. [MILLER, James, 1704-1744]
Harlequin-Horace: Or, the Art of Modern Poetry
London, printed for Lawton Gilliver at Homer's Head against St. Dunstan's church, in Fleetstreet, 1731. Marbled Wrappers. Scarce First Edition, written in 56 stanzas of rhyming verse, of this satirical poem. Foxson's second state (no known priority): correct catchword on p. 57 and p. 58 correctly numbered. Crown 8vo (189 x 122mm): [10],59,[1]pp, with folding engraved frontispiece and woodcut initials and ornaments. Later marbled wrappers, paper label printed in red and black to front cover, title page printed in red and black with bust vignette of Horace. A beautifully preserved copy, tightly bound and clean throughout. Foxon M251. Miller was a playwright whose own works were performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and who adapted plays by Molière and other French dramatists for the London stage. He only revealed his authorship of this work in the fourth edition, of 1735. Harlequin-Horace is a "witty inversion of the Ars poetica, attacking pantomime and opera and exuberantly depicting a topsy-turvy theatrical world. Alexander Pope approved, as did his disciples on the Grub-Street Journal . [The poem] lampooned the Italian operas of Handel, but Miller admired the sacred oratorios in English, and himself furnished the libretto for Joseph and his Brethren." (ODNB) N. B. Crown 8vo: [8],430,[2]; [8],382,36,[6]; [6],401,[1]pp. Uniformly bound in publisher's emerald green cloth, spines stamped in gilt, beveled edges, top edges gilt, coated chocolate-brown end papers. Minor bubbling on several covers (binding defect), pages of Volume I marginally toned, else a superb set, apparently unread and virtually pristine. Printed in editions of 500, 500, and 1000 copies, respectively. Pye 2b.3, 3b.2, 5b.1. Forman, p. 58 (noting this edition was printed from advance sheets [from the third London edition] supplied by Morris's publisher, F. S. Ellis. But according to Pye, the book was issued with both imported and domestic sheets. Our copies are from the domestic sheets.). A series of twenty-four tales, two for each month, with twelve from classical sources and twelve chiefly from medieval Latin, French, and Icelandic originals. In the mid-1860s, "Morris entered a vigorous new poetic phase which established him as one of the most popular poets of his period, on a par with Browning, Tennyson, and Swinburne. The poem that made Morris famous, The Earthly Paradise, is a large, highly coloured, hugely energetic sequence of narrative poems, a Victorian reworking of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The framework is the story of a band of late fourteenth-century Norsemen, fleeing the black death, setting sail in search of the reputed earthly paradise 'Where none grow old'. Failing to find it, they arrive at 'a nameless city in a nameless sea' where they are welcomed by the elders. " (ODNB) N. B.
