¶ ESTC T845. Without the additional folding hand coloured frontis. and portrait of Charles I and portrait of John Lloyd which are occasionally present. Includes 'Of the Patagonians' and two essays of Flintshire interest, etc. Thomas Pennant (1726–1798), naturalist, traveller, and writer ‘ ... Two of the three publications written towards the end of Pennant's life exemplify both his energy and the range of his writings ... The title of the third, [the above] by himself (1793), hints at Pennant's sense of humour. It is signed only by dotted lines to indicate the death of the author: it is for that reason that his History of the Parishes is signed ‘RESURGAM’, with its implication of literary resurrection ...’

Plate iv volume 2 with sm burn hole, light sporadic browning, contemporary speckled calf boards with gilt rule to edges, corners scuffed, rebacked with much of intricately tooled gilt spines laid down, some marking and minor loss to boards.
¶ Ex.-libris Richard Gregory Esq. of Coole, near Gort, Ireland, Captain of the Coldstream Guards. Ex.-libris John Waldie. Volume 2 has added title page engraved: The journey to Snowdon. London, Printed by H. Hughes, 1781. First and best editions, containing matter and information not in subsequent editions, the impressions of the plates far exceed the later editions. Pennant was accompanied on his travels by John Lloyd (1733-93), the text of his volumes was well-written and clearly illustrated (the drawings were by his servant Moses Griffith), which make them, among detailed surveys, the best as well as the earliest of their kind.

¶ John Roland Phillips (1844–1887) Welsh lawyer and antiquarian. His legal studies led him to take a great interest in the history and antiquities of the district, and in August 1866 he won the prize offered at Cardigan Eisteddfod for the best essay on the ‘History of Cilgerran.’ The publication of the essay in an enlarged form early in 1867 as the above.

¶ David Rhys Phillips (1862-1952) Librarian. The above work was based on his essay on ‘The history of the Neath valley’ that won a £100 prize at the 1918 National Eisteddfod. This was published in 1925 as the above. The fruit of many years research, collecting together documents and traditions of all kinds relating to the life of the community, it was reprinted in 1994. From the library of Sir (Henry) Clifford Darby (1909–1992), geographer, of upper Neath valley, Glamorgan, south Wales with his signature in pencil to front free end paper. ODNB ‘... a towering figure in British geography for sixty years in the mid-twentieth century and was in the first rank of scholars in the country ...’ With his underlining throughout.

With colour printed prospectus. Shobdon with light marginal crease. Each individually loosely enclosed in bi-fold blue/red card wrapps., titles lettered in black to upper wrapp., with Levi’s Poem printed to inner upper wrapp., publication and limitation details together with Powers’ architectural note to rear lower wrapp.
¶ Each from the Limited Edition of 150 Copies, each print is numbered, titled and signed by the Artist. According to the prospectus ‘Numbers 1-75 are complete portfolios of the eight lithographs with text. Numbers 1-12 are special copies containing progressive proofs for one of the lithographs, Numbers 76-150 are available as seperate prints.’ Alan Powers lithographic tour of the Welsh Borders accompanied by a specially written sequence of sonnets by Peter Levi. Inspired by the great colour plate travel books published in the 18th and 19th centuries and by John Piper’s ‘Brighton Aquatints’ published in 1939. Power’s lithographs with Levi’s poems are conceived as a tour beginning at Lancaut (108/150), just above Chepstow, and travelling northwards via Capel-y-Ffin (174/150), Hay Bluff (146/150), Shobdon (80/150), Montgomery (148/150), Powys Castle (128-150), and Chirk (149/150) to Flint Castle (49/150) on the Dee Estuary.
