¶ Major General John Burton Forster CB was born in 1856 and was in the Blucher from 1867 to 1872. He was Colonel of The Royal Irish Regiment. In addition to being a distinguished soldier, he had a considerable reputation as a hunter of big game. He also painted, wrote well on many subjects, was a keen yachtsman, and was possessed of considerable mechanical ability. Czech pp.115. ‘The first half of this excellent work details the equipment needed for sporting excursions including choice of firearms, cartridge boxes, tools, tents, clothing, and the like. There is even advice concerning the wearing of ‘coloured spectacles’ when entering the snow country. The second half dwells on the author’s experiences hunting blackbuck, urial, markhor, ibex, and other game, although there is little mention of the actual hunting venues. He particularly enjoyed stalking markhor, which he considered the "Monarch of the Himalayas."’
