ANGLING: A Poem.
London : Printed for H. Slater, in Clement’s-Inn, and F. Noble, at Otway’s Head in St. Martin’s-Court, near Leicester-Fields, 1741. Reissue of 1713 2nd Ed. Sm. 8vo. [iv] + [viii] + 87pp. Copper plate frontis. (shaved along tail with loss to engraver), dec. headpieces. Light browning, intriguing bookplate with Large letter L and two cherubs - one cavorting one playing a horn, marbled e.ps., inner blind dentelles, double gilt and blind fillet edged boards, some loss to edges and darkening, nicely rebacked in C19th leather, gilt fishes, saddle bag and insects with gilt lettered title label and gilt date to spine.
¶ ESTC T65283 ‘A reissue, with cancel titlepage, of ’The innocent epicure’, 2nd ed., 1713. The dedicatory poem is headed From J.S. to O.S. - The preface, recommending the work, is signed N. Tate. Ill. = frontis. Foxon, I42 First published in 1697.’ Foxon 141 (1713 2nd Ed.) ‘Put here for convenience for though Tate’s preface to the 1st Ed. is here, he did not contribute to this 2nd Ed.’ The Author’s preface states that the poem was ‘the issue of my more juvenile Minutes ...’ going on to explain that he submitted it ‘to the censure of Mr Tate ...’ Tate’s preface begins ‘The copy of this poem being sent to me from the unknown author ...’ Wing is alone in attributing this work to Tate.
