Very slight slant, mild unobtrusive damp spotting to title page. Vsevolod Garshin was best known for his short-stories. This edition is of particular interest with its introduction by the revolutionary Sergei Stepniak (Sergey Stepnyak-Kravchinsky). The translator Ethel Lilian Voynich née Boole, partner of Polish revolutionary and prominent London bibliophile and bookseller Wilfrid Voynich, was involved in pro-revolutionary activity in London and indeed learnt Russian from Stepniak. Cloth dulled and somewhat dusty-looking (inferior quality due to war economy), small water stain affecting lower edge of front free endpaper. Otherwise in good condition, tight, internally clean. Igor Gouzenko ????? ????????? ??????? (1919-1982) was perhaps better known for his defection, and its subsequent ramifications, from the Soviet Union (in 1945) carrying 109 documents on the USSR's espionage activities in the West. He wrote two books: one covering the story of his defection, and the present volume where the hero is closely based on Maxim Gorky.

In 1910, Gumilev and Sergei Gorodetskii founded "Tsekh Poetov" from which group evolved the Acmeists. The name refers to the Greek word acme or "best of all ages." Mandelshtam defined their "neo-classical form of modernism" as "a yearning for world culture." They often gathered in The Stray Dog Café in St Petersburg and produced some of the most important Russian poetry of the 20th Century. Paperback.
