Hamburg, Leipzig, The Albatross, 1936. Reprints. Two volumes, original yellow covers, 445 pp. 501 pp. Albatross lists to rear pages. Baskerville type, Bautzen paper mill, Hegner Department of Oscar Brandstetter. Generally both volumes in good condition. A little damp staining to volume one upper edge, volume two spine tail chipped, inner joint cracked. Both otherwise tight and clean. Third impression, Hamburg of I, Claudius, 2nd impression, Leipzig of Claudius the God. The Albatross publishing house had a remarkable history in the 1930s (linked to the popular Tauchnitz editions). These colour-coded paperbacks with their albatross symbol influenced Allen Lane in the design of Penguin Books. The name Albatross was chosen as it was similar in many languages. See "Strange Bird" p. 95. (Michele K Troy, 2017).
