Sympathetically re-backed in stained leather, raised bands, device in blind to compartments, lettered and ruled gilt. Marbled endpapers neatly partially renewed. Engraved portrait frontis. title in red and black, a1-d8+1292[xx]pp, engraved head and tail-pieces. Early owner's name inside also 1954, A Seligmann's name. Loosely enclosed note. Very tight, crisp and clean. A very good copy. Note and 1954 newspaper cutting refer to Gottlob Friedrich Seligmann, Lutheran theologian and physicist, on p. 1168.

London, Longman's, Green, and Co, 1870. In very good condition, cloth bright, crisp inside, possibly unused. Small 8vo. original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, boards ruled in blind. 'Kings College London' in gilt to spine tail. Other library marks negligible. 3 folding philological maps, table, index. Later republished with 'Chapters on Language' as 'Language and Languages'. Used; Very Good The title page is blind-stamped "Bulstrode, Gerrards Cross, Bucks". It also appears to have been, at a later date, part of the Walford collection at Kings College, London. Farrar was a classics scholar and a comparative philologist, who applied Charles Darwin's ideas of branching descent to the relationships between languages, engaging in a protracted debate with the anti-Darwinian linguist Max Müller. Hardback.

Wogan was a Dublin publisher at the time, Richardson published in London and Derby. Original publisher's speckled paper-covered boards, 16mo.(18x11cm) 144pp. woodcut frontis. 10 other woodcuts, alphabet and other tables (reproduced from early but not first edition). Neat old repair to spine and inner joint now splitting. Internally scarcely used, bright and clean. Used; Good Best known of Fenning's prolific works. This edition contains: the spelling book, fables and stories, part II word lists arranged by syllable length, part III the grammar followed by natural history, geography, weights and measures, foreign words and prayers. Frontis. illustration depicts three scenes from the18th century school day, 8 moral fables illustrated with woodcuts, 2 woodcuts (lion and elephant) illustrating natural history. Certainly not for the faint hearted: one of the so-described 'natural entertaining' stories is illustrated by a woodcut of a naked child who has drowned with his naked friend being beaten by a parent! . Giovanni Galignani 1757-1821, was an Italian newspaper publisher who lived both in London and Paris. He started Galignani's Messenger, a paper mentioned in Turgenev and by other contemporary authors. Engraved frontis. [iv]+78+38+4pp. Leather a little scuffed at edges, and at spine, early juvenilia to frontis. verso, otherwise tight and clean. No loss. Two plays bound together with additional poems. The first play honours James Crichton the Scottish 16th C. polymath, while the second play relates to the Second Partition of Poland (1793). Ex libris bookplate (Fortis in Arduis) of James Wyllie Guild (1826-1894), Scottish public accountant and antiquarian. Over 3000 items from his library and antiquarian collections were sold at auction in April 1888.

Paper brittle as is usual with place and time of publication, a little browned, first pages loose with a closed tear but no loss but a good copy. Descriptive grammar by eminent oriental scholar interested particularly in the dialects of Bihar. In 1898 Grierson was appointed as supervisor of the project The Linguistic Survey of India or LSI. The present volume first appeared (first edition) as a paper in the Asiatic Journal in 1881. This seems to be the first printing of this work in book form. Hardcover.

The present volume is possibly the only work of literature by Baron Franz von Paula Gruithuisen (1774 - 1852). Better known as a physician and as an astronomer, his contributions to weather-forecasting and the understanding of sun-spots were far-reaching. As a medical man, he was also noted for his work in urology and lithotripsy. However, his hypotheses about the inhabitants of the moon and how to correspond to them, subjected him to ridicule.

John Hartley (1839–1915) prolific author writing in the Yorkshire dialect. Born in Halifax, Hartley wrote a number of books featuring "Sammywell Grimes" and his adventures and mishaps.
