Two engraved plates, engraved tail-piece, subscribers' list. Small tear to spine head, a little loss to title label, mild internal foxing else very good. Author's presentation copy to a Mr Davidson Esq with a later owner's (Mr Frederick Houghton) neat ex-libris to paste-down. Jabez Allies (1787 – 1856) was an English folklorist and antiquarian. Born at Lulsley, Worcestershire, where his family had resided for generations. He was one of the earliest writers on folklore. In early youth he was deeply impressed by the lingering relics of Roman and Saxon days and by the pastoral life that characterised his native place and later in life and threw light upon vestiges of Roman occupation in his native county. Used; Good Interesting provenance: inscribed A M Asquith, Khartoum 1906. A M ('Oc') Asquith was the third son of the British Prime Minister. He served in the Egyptian Civil Service from1906–11. The author, H F Saphir Amery, younger brother of Leo Amery and uncle of Julian Amery, was seconded for service with the Egyptian Army in 1901, and remained in Egypt till 1911, acting as Assistant Director of Intelligence and Indian Agent. Amery was a gifted linguist, with an exceptional knowledge of Eastern languages. Hardback.

Small 8vo. full green soft leather (sheep?), title to upper board, untitled spine ruled gilt. iv+162pp. Very attractively illustrated throughout with in-text woodcuts and colophons. Much rubbed at edges, upper board creased at corner, modern tape repair to inner joints, may lack front-free end-paper and half title. However complete and mainly clean. Woodcuts reprinted from early nineteenth century. This primer, was frequently reprinted by different publishers but is nevertheless scarce. The COPAC earliest listed edition (referenced by Alston) is a two-volume work published between 1779 and 1789. No author is given.

Contents showing some normal damp spotting at edges, small snags at spine ends, two early 20C. decorated ex-libris plates and one more modern owner inscription. 30pp introduction and 30pp notes (in German), c. 65pp Syriac text printed using the publisher's new Syriac type. A late work by the Semitic and Oriental scholar and theologian Georg Heinrich Bernstein. According to the bookplates, this copy had been owned by two of his contemporaries (F Muehlau, Adolph Ruecker) - both scholars in similar fields. Muehlau collaborated with Gesenius on the classic dictionary. "In 1853 Bernstein published in Svo St. John's Gospel in the Harclean text from a Vatican MS. No. 271, which has neither asterisks, obeli, nor marginal notes ; but it has the vowel-points, together with Kushoi and Rucoch. This edition is accompanied by valuable critical remarks containing descriptions of some MSS. and comparisons of readings. " . Hardback.

The Petit Grandisson is written in the form of letters from Guillaume D. to his mother during his visit to England. Very neatly inscribed in ink by Miss Eliza Eleanor Farnell, 1826. Adam Petri' s mark depicting arms of Basel supported by two basilisks). Latin, black letter, in two columns. Generally in very good condition. Spine decorations rubbed, upper hinge starting. Internally very tight and crisp, no annotations nor marks of ownership. Old worm holes to much of text, but isolated and not affecting integrity of paper; legibility may be very slightly affected on some leaves. Lacks final blank (O6). Rare post incunabula printing of Biblical work by the Benedictine monk Pierre Bersuire (c.1290 – 1362). The Reductorium Morale to the Sacred Scriptures in thirty-four books, embracing all the books of the Bible. Also known as the Liber Bibliae Moralis. Printed at Ulm and Strasburg in 1474, in Basel in 1515, and in Lyon in 1536. Bersuire was noted for his extraordinary memory and his early encyclopaedic work in Biblical commentary. The printer and publisher, Adam Petri, was one of the first in Basel to work with illustrators, collaborating with the notorious Urs Graf as well as Hans Holbein the Younger. The present volume features an Urs Graf decorated title page with publishing details and Petri's device inset.
