Paris, Chez Sebastian Mabre-Cramoisy, 1670.
. 4to. Pp. (xii), 382, (2). With engraved decorated extra title and twenty-one engraved illustrations in the text, three engraved headpieces and three engraved initials by Sébastien Le Clerc. Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands decorated in gilt and with title label. Binding rubbed, hinges cracked and spine ends chipped. Copy of Carl Iserhielm (1681-1748), a renowned Swedish book collector, and Mr. Rumpf (CM). First French edition of this famous work of the Ottoman empire mainly based on Rycaut's personal experiences. It was originally published in English in 1666/67 but most of that edition was destroyed in the great fire of London. Sir Paul Rycaut was a British diplomat who served as secretary to the British Ambassador in Constantinople between 1661 and 1667, later he was appointed consul at Smyrna (now Izmir). This account describes the Ottoman government and political principals but also includes important information about the Mahometan religion, the maritime and land forces of Turkey. The illustrations are mainly costume plates after a book Ricaut had commissioned from an artist at the bazaar in Constantinople. This narrative became popular, was reprinted many times and translated into several languages. Cf Atabey 1069. Cf Blackmer 1464. Willems 1872.

TORQUATO (ARQUATO), ANTONIO ETC.:

. 16mo. Lvs 51. Old marbled paper covered boards, restored, spine with title label in manuscript, bottom of spine chipped. Copy of Ericsberg castle. A compilation of smaller treatises on Europe and the Orient. Comprises: "Prognosticon d. Magistri Antonij Torquati, artium & medicinae Doctoris Ferrarien. Clarissimiq; astrologi, de euersione Europae ... MCCC.LXXX. direxit"; "Europae descriptio" by Anselmus & Christophorus Cella; "De fide & religione, moribvsqve & caeromoniis Aethiopum" by Franciscus Titelmans; "Legatio Magni Indorum" by D. a Gois; "De origine regvm Turcarvm compendiosa quaedam perioche, per Andream à Lacuna Secobiensem, collecta"; and "De Turcarvm cvltv ac moribus enarratio quaedam breiuscula". Arquato's Prognosticon first appeared in 1534, without given place or printer, and was presumable inspired by the Turks' failure before Vienna in 1529 and their subsequent reverses in Austria and Syria in 1532. It's likely to have been intended as propaganda for Charles V's crusade against Tunis in 1535. Antonio Torquato was a Ferrarese physian and astrologer. This prophecy became popular, frequently reprinted and translated into several languages. Kenneth Meyer Setton: "Western hostility to Islam, and prophecies of Turkish doom", pp. 26-27. Göllner Turcica iii, pp. 341-42. Gois' "Legatio Magni Indorum Imp." was first published in 1532 (Antverpen) with an English edition appearing in 1533. It comprises pages 28 - 45 of this work, including the part about the Lapps "De Pilapiis" (pp. 44-45). It is a reprint of the first edition. It is one of the oldest books composed in French prose. The second work about the Latin empire in the Levant is by Charles du Fresne, sieur du Cange (1620-88), a distinguished French philologist and historian of the Middle Ages and Byzantium. He is best known for his Glossarium mediae et infimae latinitatis (1678). Blackmer 501. Cf Atabey 1291 (Villehardouin 1585 ed.).

WORTLEY MONTAGU, LADY MARY:
Lettres, écrites pendant ses voyages en diverses parties du monde. Traduits de l'anglois. Nouvelle édition. Beacoup plus correcte que les éditions qui viennent de paroître. Two parts in one volume. Paris, Duchesne, 1764.
. 12mo. Pp. viii, 240; (ii), 223. Contemporary calf, richly gilt, gilt inner dentelles, rubbed. Front cover and the first part of the book have small wormholes running through the text, more severe at pages 79-139 with slight loss of text. A French edition of Lady Wortley Montagu famous Letters first published in London the previous year. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was the first lady to travel abroad for mere curiosity's sake. In 1716 her husband was appointed Ambassador to the Porte and she decided to join him, which was considered a scandalous decision. They settled into a hilltop palace at Pera in Constantinople, which became their home for 18 months. Her letters (written after her return to England) provide an intriguing example of authorial selectivity. She treats the political, historical and social morals of the Germans, Austrian and Turkish courts. She became a great admirer of Turkish culture and her work includes insights that were exceptional for their time; the paradoxical freedoms conferred on Muslim women by veil, the value of experimental work by Turkish doctors on inoculation and the beauty of Arab poetry and culture. Cf. Atabey 829-30. Cox p. 229. Robinson p. 32.
