. 4to. Pp. (iv), 176, 178-304. Modern half calf, spine ruled in gilt and with a red title label. Occasionally some minor browning. Second edition, first published in 1667 in only 500 copies. A scarce Swedish collection of travels printed at the private press of Count Brahe in Wisingsborg by the German bookprinter Johan Kankel. They are the first proper travel accounts published in Sweden.Comprises: I. Kiöping's narrative of his voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Arabia, Persia, continuing to the Far East. His story was partly imaginative but became enormously popular at the time. Kiöping was employed as a bosun on a Dutch ship which in 1648 took him to Guinea and later to the Cape of Good Hope. He writes about his stay in Persia where he was in the service of the Shah and then about his journey on horseback to Bagdad. In 1652 he continued by ship to Ceylon and then to Java and Formosa (where Fredrik Coyet was governor). See Lasse Berg, När Sverige upptäckte Afrika, Stockholm 1997, pp. 11-15. II. Also contains a translation of François CaronÕs account of Japan. See Hjärne, Två svenska Japanfarare, pp. 17-83. IV. An account of a journey from Moscow to China.

KOOPS, MATTHIAS:, Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events, and to Convey Ideas, from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. London, Printed by Jaques & Co., 1801.
KOOPS, MATTHIAS:
Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events, and to Convey Ideas, from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. London, Printed by Jaques & Co., 1801.
. Pp. 274. With engraved frontispiece of an Egyptian papyrus. Old ownership signature on title. Contemporary calf on marbled boards, expertly rebacked to style, with title label. The second, revised and much enlarged edition (first 1800). This edition was printed on remanufactured white paper and became the first book printed on recycled paper in the West! The appendix (pp. 259-274) is printed on paper made from wood pulp. Matthias Koops was a pioneer in mechanical paper making with extensive experience in paper manufacture from recycled paper at the Neckinger mill in South London. He invented new processes for making paper from wood pulp rather than rags, and for recycling paper so that it could be used for printing. Between 1800 and 1801 Koops was granted three patents for making paper from a number of unusual substances. The first edition of this work was printed entirely on yellow paper made from straw. This version of the second edition was printed on recycled paper with the exception of the frontispiece which was printed on straw paper. Contains much statistical information about the paper industry in Britain and elsewhere in Europe at the time. Dard Hunter (1947), pp. 332-40, 375-6, & p. 523. Cf. Bigmore & Wyman p. 399.
