Very rare work by two American women missionaries serving in Burma.Sarah Hall, American-born missionary, arrived in Burma in 1827 together with her first husband George Broadman. Eventually they settled in Tavoy where they established schools and church for the Karen people. Broadman died in 1831 and a few years later Sarah married missionary Adoniram Judson, one of the pioneers of missionary work in Burma. Sarah made many translations of scriptures, devotional poetry, prepared a hymn book and compiled several books of scripture questions for Sunday schools.Due to poor health Sarah, along with her husband, was on her way home to the USA when she died on St Helena in 1845. Emily Chubbock (with the pen name Fanny Forester) became Adoniram Judson's third wife. They sailed together for Burma in 1846 and there Emily devoted herself to missionary work, wrote and translated several works. She compiled the second part of this work, a continuation of the first part made by Sarah, here posthumously published. "I am now engaged in writing questions on the Acts of the Apostles, in Burmese, for the use of the Bible Classes and Sabbath School. We have a Sabbath School, numbering nearly a hundred children, and a Bible Class of twenty adults" (Fanny Forrester "Memoir of Sarah B. Judson" 1860, p. 162). Not in Cordier.

First edition, limited to 200 copies, of which this is no. 15. Tyra Kleen travelled to Java and Bali in 1919 where she studied the ritual court dances. This work is devoted to temple dancers in Bali. It describes the different kinds of dances (Legong, Tjalong Arong and Djoged), their history, costumes and music. The text is accompanied by plates depicting clothes, head garments, dance movements, and musicians. The illustrations show her unique artistic oeuvre with the ability to interweave dance, literature, activism and adventure. For her scientific ethnographic work on Bali Tyra was awarded the Johan August Wahlberg silver medal in 1938. A beautiful copy with dynamic, colourful art deco style images of dancers.

. Comprises four original articles titled "The English Governess at the Siamese Court" issued in serialised form in the Atlantic Monthly by Anna Leonowens. (Volume XXV, nos. 150-152 and volume XXVI no 154). They were published before the enlarged text in book form (Boston 1870). As issued in original paper wrappers, two spines lightly chipped. This well-known account by an English governess is about her life with the Royal family of Siam (Thailand). King Mongkut (or Rama IV), a well-educated and fashionable man, wanted to give his children an European education. Anna Leonowens spent six years (1862-67) at the court where she taught the King's children and wives. Her "exotic" articles and memoirs received a lot of attention but the accuracy of her work has been questioned. Otherwise it is a charming story which Margaret Landon used for her novel "Anna and the King of Siam" (1944) and it was followed by a musical and a film "The King and I". Cordier BI 738. . Two original articles later incorporated into Leonowens' book "Romance of the Harem" published in 1873. As issued in original printed wrappers. Uncut, in perfect condition. Anna Leonowens, an English governess who for six years was employed by the Siamese King Mongkut (Rama IV) for the instruction of his children including his son and successor Prince Chulalongkorn. Later she resided in New York where she contributed articles to the Atlantic Monthly, a literary and cultural commentary magazine founded in Boston in 1857. Leonowens' memoirs of the Siamese court life have been considered exaggerated and unfair but nevertheless it is a captivating story which was used for Landon's novel "Anna and the King of Siam" and later in a musical and film. . Palm leaf. Complete with 16 leaves (13 cm x 59 cm) of text in Pali, written in Burmese "square" script. The leaves consist of cloth, the fabric of discarded monk's robes, which has been lacquered to provide a rigid surface. (Copper is also used and more rarely ivory). The lacquered surface is gilded and the design is painted in red lacquer and finally the script applied in black laquer. Within wooden covers, similarly gilded and decorated, bevelled edges. A beautiful copy.The Kammavaca is a collection of extracts from the Pali Vinaya, the monastic code of discipline, outlining rituals and observances of the Buddhistic order. It was customary for a Burmese family to commission a copy of the Kammavaca on the occasion of their son entering the monkhood. First French edition of the sections about Tonkin and Laos in Marini's "Delle missioni dé padri della Compagnia di Giesu nella provincia del Giappone, e particolarmente di quella di Tumkino" (1663).The second part has a separate title "Relation nouvelle et curieuse des royaumes de Tunquin et de Lao" and is only devoted to Laos. Marini was an Italian Jesuit who served for more than forty years as missionary in Asia (Tonkin, Macao and Japan) in the 17th century. He died at Macao in 1682. First edition of this historical and topographical poem about Batavia. Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a seaman at the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for a long period in the beginning of the 18th century. He was the Commander of a VOC ship to the East Indies in 1731 and visited Batavia at this time. A year later he retired from the Company and moved on to a career of writing and theatre directing. Landwehr, VOC, 1547. Provenance: This copy was given by Hendrik Johannes Bool (1828-98), Dutch officer and politician, to Aristide Marre (1823-1918), a renowned linguist and specialist in classical Malay and Malagasy. He succeeded Pierre Favre at the School of Oriental languages in Paris.

For eight years he resided in Bencoolen (Bangkhulu) in Sumatra where he studied the language and people. Back in England he was encouraged by Sir Joseph Banks and others of the Royal Society to prepare his collected material for publication. His comprehensive work "History of Sumatra" appeared in 1783 and in 1812 he published this grammar and also a dictionary of the Malay language, which form the basis of all subsequent Sumatran linguistics. It is chiefly devoted to the history of the self-supporting female schools among the Karens.Ellen Mason, American Baptist missionary who spent more than thirty years in British Burma. She arrived in 1843 with her first husband Edwin Bullard. He died a few years later and she then married American missionary Francis Mason. They worked among the Karens in the city of the Tounghoo (today Taungoo), the capital of Burma in the 16th century. The Toungoo dynasty ruled the country for over 200 years (16th - 18th centuries). After the Second Anglo-Burmese War the district was cut in half and the British annexed the southern part. British troops were withdrawn in 1893. Cordier BI 307.
