. Pp. viii, 194. A tiny hole in the last leaf. Modern quarter calf on marbled paper boards, spine gilt in compartments and with title label, g.e. First edition, seems very rare. "In the foregoing pages, I have attempted to give an impartial sketch of the history of public writings in India. I have also endeavoured to prove from facts, that the diffusion of knowledge, through the medium of education and a Free Press, must rapidly improve the condition of society there, and in the surrounding world" (Conclusion: p. 193). Stanhope (1784-1862) was an army officer who in 1817 was appointed Deputy Quartermaster-General in India.
