Contemporary marbled calf, gilt dentelles on covers, spine richly gilt in compartments and with red title label, spine rubbed, skillfully rebacked with original spine preserved. Bookplate. First English edition translated from the French original (Paris 1801). The French naval officer Grandpré started his voyage from ële de France (Mauritius) and travelled via the Maldives to the Seychelles, India, Cochin China, Yemen and Ceylon. His informative account describes the customs of the people along the route, commerce and navigation, religious rites and the Arabic influence in India. Grandpré was also very concerned about European influence in the area, particularly regarding the French in Pondichery, India. With one coloured map as frontispiece, 39 full page lithographed plates and many illustrations in the text after photographs taken by the author. Original blue cloth, spine ends chipped and part of upper hinge split. Ex. museum library copy. With old inscription on title by Reinhold Rost (German Orientalist, chief librarian at the India Office). First edition. A comprehensive dictionary listing and explaining names and words connected with rural life in Bihar, a state in eastern India. It covers in detail agriculture, animal husbandry, housing, clothing, trade and money-dealing, etc. The Bihar words are given in native characters with English transliteration. Grierson was an Irish-born linguist who served for many years in British India. He would eventually become Magistrate and Collector at Patna and, later, Opium Agent for Bihar. He was appointed Superintendent of the newly formed Linguistic survey of India and moved to England "for convenience of consulting European libraries and scholars".

First edition of the first grammar and vocabulary of the Maithili language, a distinct Indo-Aryan language spoken by the inhabitants of Bihar in Eastern India and the Tarai districts of Nepal. Prior to Grierson's work Maithili was thought to be simply a corrupt form of Hindi. Grierson was an Irish-born linguist who served for many years in British India. He published numerous studies in the journals of learned associations and became Superintendent of the monumental Linguistic survey of India founded in 1894. These two parts were published as extra numbers to the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, parts one and two. (1880 and 1882). Not in Vater.

First edition, scarce. A narrative of the Nilgiri Mountains (or Blue Mountains), bordering the Karnataka Plateau and the states of Kerala in southern India. It's a mountainous region that was unknown to the British until 1818, but later became their favourite summer and weekend getaway.

Old ownership signature on titles. Reverend Heber, the Bishop of Calcutta, first arrived in India in 1823. He travelled extensively around the country for some years and died in Madras in 1826. His work contains valuable information about the people and culture of India at this time. It's based on letters and diary entries and was published posthumously by his widow Amalia Heber. First published in quarto in the same year (1828). Occasionally some minor staining but overall a crisp, good copy. "A highly valuable, interesting and most delightful work" (Lowndes ii, p. 1030). This is the first Western translation of the Susruta Samhitá, which is one of the most important ancient medical treatises, and considered a foundational text of Ayurveda. Susruta was an Indian physician and is recognised as the father of Indian surgery. Includes a Sanskrit - Latin index of plants and trees. Two more parts titled "fasciculi" comprising comments and annotations were published in 1852 and 1855. Susruta Samhit‹ is an encyclopaedia of medical learning and includes the earliest description of plastic surgery. The complete version comprises 184 chapters with descriptions of over 1000 illnesses, 700 medical plants, 127 surgical instruments, etc. The first complete English translation was published in 1907 at Calcutta.
