. Pp. (viii), 652. With water-staining, worst at the beginning of the book, mainly in the margins. 19th century half calf, spine ruled in gilt, new title label, rubbed. Library stamp on title (Dominion Museum, Wellington). First edition. Marathi has some of the oldest literature of all modern Indian languages, dating back to around 600 AD. William Carey (1761-1834) was an English missionary and a foremost linguist who spent 41 years in India. He was a professor of Sanskrit, Marathi and Bengali at Fort William College in Calcutta. Carey made many English translations of Hindu classics and translated the Bible into several Indian languages. He and other missionaries developed a peculiar "pidginized" Marathi to be used for translations. Carey established the missionary press at Serampore in 1799 where he, together with William Ward and Joshua Marshman, printed dictionaries, classical literature and other works. Very rare. Ewing Colombo". Library stamps. Bookplate. Rare, short useful manual in Sinhalese, comprising 84 lessons followed by an index. It was first published in 1860 by William Skeene at the Government Press. Carter (1828-1914) served as a Baptist missionary in Ceylon for many years. He published an important English-Sinhalese dictionary in 1891.

The beautiful plates depict views, sacred and famous buildings and sites, exotic animals including wild beasts fights and tiger hunt, etc. William Daniell travelled in India with his uncle Thomas Daniell for eight years and they produced a number of highly desirable aquatint illustrated works of the country including the renowned "Oriental Scenery" (1794). This volume is included in a series of seven volumes issued between 1834 and 1840.

The first work is an outline grammar and the second comprises twenty-one letters written with different styles of composition, and in different scripts (nasta'liq, shikasteh and nagari).
