Contains the first printed ethnographical description of the land of the Kalmucks. Schnitzker, a Swedish born captain in the Russian Army, accompanied a Chinese embassy to the Kalmyk Aiuk Khan in 1714. His comprehensive account of the Kalmyks comprises information about the life, customs, and beleifs of the people, as well as on the Russo-Kalmyk and Russo-Chinese relations at the time. Includes notes by Johan Gustaf Renat, an officer who lived in this area for 17 years. Printed by Lars Salvius and includes a preface by him. . Small 8vo. Pp. (iv), 203, (1) with errata leaf tipped in. Original cloth, rubbed and spine ends chipped. Rare travelogue of a journey made in 1846 by an officer returning through Europe to his regimental base in India. The authorship is attributed to Charles Foveaux Kirkby, then a captain in the Fourteenth Madras Native Infantry. The account describes the visit to Paris and then is mainly devoted to his stay in Rome. From there he passed through Naples, Sorrento, Malta and Alexandria before taking a steamer from Cairo to Madras. This work is one of only two known from the Colombian Press at Bangalore! The second work is a Tamil language book printed in 1850. See: D.E. Rhodes article in The British Museum Quarterly, vol. 34 no. 3/4 (1970), pp. 83-86. Seems scarce, we've only found two library copies (British Library and Princeton University). Not in Diehl.

. Pp. (viii), 278. With four folding maps or plans, and one folding table in the text. Marginal tears to title and second leave. Text browned and some staining. Contemporary cloth, worn and stained. Recased and repairs to endpapers. Ribeiro, a Portuguese captain stationed in India was sent to Ceylon where he served for many years in the Portuguese army against the Dutch. His vivid account was translated into French by Joachim Le Grand and published in 1701 (Paris). A Portuguese edition was first published in 1836. This English version by George Lee has been enlarged with an appendix. Ribeiro's history comprises a general account of Ceylon followed by a part devoted to the war between the Portugese, the natives and the Dutch.

The Ceylon Bible Society was formed in 1812 and it's main task was to translate the Bible into Cingalese (Sinhala) and making it accessible to the natives. The Wesleyan Press was established in 1815. This is an annual report of the Society's transactions of the year 1817 including information about the translation of the scriptures and religious treatises, and the state of the Society's funds. The appendix comprises many letters about the missionary work in the island.

First English edition of the famous account by two German missionaries about their religious discussions in Tranquebar with Hindu heathens. Ziegenbalg and Gründler, German Lutherans, spent many years as missionaries in Tranquebar, a small Danish colony on the south-east coast of India. Mission stations were found in Srirangam, Tanjore, Madura, Kanchi, Chidambram and Tirupathi. The missionaries travelled extensively and established contacts with the Brahmans.

First edition of two Sinhalese poems dealing with demonolatry of Ceylon, translated by John Callaway, a missionary living there at the time. The striking illustrations of demons are made by native artists. As often the addendum with information about the Oriental Translation Fund (three pages) is not present.

First edition of an important type specimen of the Hindustani language. It contains the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary and the Apostles' Creed and deals with the language and script used at the University of Kas’ or Benares, in the Indian province of Bihar. The script is rendered in Kaithi characters, a more current form of the Nagari characters, and was written by Cassianus da Macerata Beligatti (1708-91). The types were cut already at the start of the Propaganda Press but not used until a century later. They were first displayed in Georgius' "Alphabetum Tibetanum" of 1759. Birrel & Garnett 12.
