Pp. 79, 90-368, (7). Nicely printed by the famous Brescian brothers Dorico. Including one double page woodcut map of the northern coast of Tunis and the southern part of Sicily. With dedication to Pope Julius III with his coat of arms as woodcut vignette on title page. Title page restored (slight loss of one letter) and two more leaves with marginal repairs without any loss of text. Some minor browning and small marginal wormholes. Contemporary limp vellum, top of spine restored, title in manuscript on spine and library ink marks. Library stamp on title. Scarce first edition of this trustworthy account of Charles V's campaigns against the Turkish corsair Dragut (Turgut Reis) who was based at Mahdia on the Tunisian coast, and made it the centre of his piracy activities. However in 1550 the Genoese Andrea Doria (1466-1560), the foremost naval leader of his time, attacked and captured Mahdia. Adams N368. Cf Gay 378. Göllner 926.

First edition, second issue with imprimatur And. Nordblad on verso of title. Some staining. In 1790 after 12 years' Dutch service Padenheim joined the Sierra Leone Company in London founded by Granville Sharp. Padenheim together with three other Swedes; August Nordenskjöld (minerologist), Adam Afzelius (botanist) and Jacob Strand (governor secretary) arrived in Sierra Leone in February 1792 to participate in establishing a "free slave" colony there, and further more arranging for transport of released slaves from America and England to this colony. Padenheim's work comprises five letters, of which one was written at London and the other four at Freetown between October 1791 and October 1792. The letters comprise information about the establishment of the Sierra Leone Company in London, the voyage from England to Africa, living conditions and difficulties that arised at the newly built town Freetown and its neighbourhood town Timmaney. Padenheim together with Carl Bernard Wadström created the Swedish image of Africa at this time. See Dahlgren, Carl Bernard Wadström, NTBB 1915, p. 40. Old annotations. Copy of Ericsberg. Scarce comprehensive account on Algeria by a Swede who served at the Swedish Consulate in Alger. The first part is devoted to Algeria in general including information about the history and the various inhabitants (Turcs, Arabs, Jews, Christians). The second part deals with the city of Alger, its origin, climate, goverment, military, pirates, marriage, etc. One chapter (pp. 454 - 536) is devoted to slavery with interesting and detailed information about their conditions. Includes two folding city plans of Alger (with tear and small loss) and Oran, and three nice costume plates. Playfair 243. His work is based on previous written works which are listed in the prefaces but also to a large extent on his own observations and experiences. His account is considered to be the best contemporary description of the area.

Large 4to. Pp. xii, 119, (4). Preface by Léonce Bénédite. With 30 (15 doublets) dry point etchings of which 15 are water coloured. Each etching is signed by the artist (Ph.Z.) and the coloured are signed (Ph. Zilcken). All protected by a tissue guard. Four queries (pp. 5-20) starting to loosen. Original printed wrappers housed in a slipcase. From an edition of 120 this is one of only 8 copies on Japon with a suite of etchings coloured by the artist (aquarelles). This is number 3 of the 8 copies. A few leaves with small marginal stain but overall a lovely copy of a very attractive work. A beautiful collection of etchings depicting views, landscapes, houses, and people of Algeria. Philippe Zilcken (1857-1930) was a Dutch printmaker, painter and writer. He was taught by Klinkenberg and Anton Mauve at the Drawing Academy in the Hague. As a graphic artist Zilcken achieved considerable fame, especially through his reproduction etchings of works by 17th century masters as Vermeer. He made several travels to Algeria and Egypt. An interesting introduction by Léonce Bénédite who highly praises the work.
