Guignard (1735-1821), French politician and diplomat, was appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in 1768 and remained there until 1785 with the exemption of a short period (1776-78). His memoirs comprise a history of French relations with the Ottoman empire, biographies of previous French ambassadors and agents to the Porte and finally a history of French commerce and navigation in the Levant. Here for the first time published, included in "Publications de l'Ecole des Langues Orientales Vivantes". Not in Atabey.

He was usually called the founder of Byzantine archaeology and gives in this work a circumstantial account of the antiquities of Constantinople. The first Elzevir edition. Berghman 1895. Baron Haller (1708-77) was a famous Swiss scientist and poet who published three philosophical romances, of which this is one. It is an utopian story taking place in a fictional Persia and Haller constructs an ideal system of political values based on eastern theories rather than typical western values. The author Hafiz Ahmed Hassan was in the service of the Nawab (governor) of Tonk, a small kingdom in today's Rajastan. The account commences with a description of the Tonk state, it's administration and political intrigues. In 1870 the Nawab made a pilgrimage to Mecca and Hassan accompanied him. The journey starts from Bombay and continues via Aden and Jedda before reaching Mecca and Medina. Includes interesting information about Mecca and the proceedings of the Hajj at this time.

He died in 1752 at Smyrna and his work was posthumously published by Linné (his former teacher), who said: "So admirable a travel journal has never before appeared". Includes the important "Descriptiones Rerum Naturalium Praestantiorum" and also some letters from Hasselquist to Linneaus. Beautiful contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spine decorated in gilt, top of spine with small repair. Bookplate (Tidö). First edition of this very attractive work on Turkey and its customs and manners. It was originally published in twelve separate parts, limited to about 525 copies. Compiled by Johan Hedenborg, a Swedish natural historian who in 1825 was appointed medical adviser to the Swedish Ambassador C.G. Löwenhielm in Constantinople. Atabey 567. Blackmer 800.
