4to. Pp. xii, 80 + 79 plates depicting different Kanji and Kata-kana characters. Sewn as issued, uncut, in original printed wrappers. First edition of this German - Japanese dictionary which gives the Kanji (Chinese) character together with the Katakana sound followed by the German and English translation together with the Japanese synonym. Pzifmaier (1808-1887) was a prolific translator of Japanese works into German. Only this first part was published (ending with Ittan and Ittai resp.) due to limited commercial success. A detailed map printed in Japanese, towns also printed in English. Some small repairs on verso, nicely done. Housed in original printed folder with a tie, lightly rubbed. Overall a very attractive and easily accessible map done for tourists. Price on the cover in red was 30 sen (!) in 1887. Edited by Sakai Sutehiko of an ex-samurai family of the Mito clan.

Occasionally a few stains to text. First edition. A splendid collection of delicate wood-block prints of butterflies and birds. The images (several on each plate) are patterned in various designs made of beautiful "silky" colours, some highlighted with silver. Furuya Setsuzan was a renowned Meiji-period artist. Seems very uncommon, only one library copy found (Fashion Institute of Technology Library, N.Y.).

Original silk covers, worn and with traces of removed label, inner back hinge strengthened. Small staining to inner margin and some browning to the paper. Some tears at folds. A charming work with thirty-five different beautiful brocade tea caddie bags, in various sizes ad shapes, wood-cut printed in lovely colours and with good impressions. Shimomura, a protege of Kamisaka Sekka and master designer in his own right. The printing was made by Honda Ichijiro. Scarce.

Some browning to the endpapers but the woodcuts are in excellent condition with good impression. First edition. Rokkaku Shisui (1867-1950) was an authority on Japanese lacquer ware. He made study tours to the US and Europe.

Oblong folio. Size: 19 x 42 cm. With lithographic title and 24 hand-coloured collotype printed plates. Original silk padded boards, mount Fuji in embrodery on upper cover, silk ties, all edges gilt. Old inscription on front paste down. Kozaburo Tamamura (1856-1923?) was a famous Japanese photographer with a studio in Yokohama where he specialized in tourist photographs for export. In the early 1900's a branch office in Kobe was opened. A deluxe edition of this album comprising 24 hand coloured collotypes with descriptive captions in English, protected with tissue guards. The beautiful plates depict scenes from the country side, gardens, parks, sea and temple grounds from different parts of Japan. A wonderful copy of a scarce work.

[A Japanese lacquer album with 50 hand coloured photographs. Ca 1880's].
A charming small Japanese album (18 x 13,5 cm) with 50 hand coloured albumen photos (13,5 x 9 cm), protected with tissue guards, pasted on thick cardboard. The leaves are double folded. Original lacquered boards with gilt decorations on both covers. The album comprises photos with 25 scenic views from different parts of Japan; Yokohama, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Tokyo, etc. Many of the photos have printed captions. The verso contains 25 photographs of people, mainly of women in different costumes and situations, of which many are portraits taken in a studio, others depict scenes from everyday life. None of these photos have any captions. Some with foxing to the card board but all the photos are in good condition. A most appealing album. This type of souvenir albums begun to appear in the second half of the 19th century in Japan. At first most of the studios were based in Yokohama but after the 1880's several studios opened in Tokyo, Kobe and Nagasaki. See Terry Bennett, Old Japanese Photographs, London, Quaritch 2006.

Thick oblong 8vo. Size: 15 x 22 cm. Pp. (iv) with title and preface + lexicon double folded lvs (499), arranged alphabetically, ending with a Japanese title. Japanese red stamps on title. Leaves folded in the oriental manner. Title with brown staining. Original blue cloth, worn and soiled, internally in good condition. Housed in a specially made cloth box. Originally compiled by Tatsunosuke in 1862 (200 printed copies) and here revised by Kamenoskay. This is probably a second issue of the second edition. Cordier gives the date 1866 and the preface is also dated 1866. This dictionary is the first substantial English-Japanese vocabulary, the first edition of which predates Hepburn's Japanese - English dictionary by five years. According to the preface the first edition contained a number of errors regarding the Japanese and Chinese names of animals, plants and minerals that needed to be corrected. This has been done in the second edition with the assistance of Yanagawa Sunsam, Tanaka Yosiwo and others. Cordier BJ 672 (states 1866). Not in Astor Catalogue, Collison, the Trubner Catalogue, or Zaunmüller.

Contemporary half calf, title lettered on spine, rubbed, cover slighty warped. A reprint of Thunberg's significant work on Japanese plants which he issued as a complement to his "Flora Japonica" (1784). The work comprises some of the first western illustrations of Japanese species. Thunberg, Swedish botanist and pupil of Linneaus, visited Japan disguised as a Dutchman. He was confined to the articial island Dejima outside Nagasaki and had few opportunities to visit the mainland. However he was able to get a remarkable accurate picture of the Japanese flora. Mukashi watari sarasa (Ancient calicos imported to Japan). Three volumes. Kyoto, Unsodo hatsubai, Taisho 6 (1917).
Folio. Lvs. (26); (23); (25). With 4 leaves with Japanese text and 70 lvs with numerous pieces of woodblock printed designs of Sarasa. The lvs are folded in the Japanese style. Original decorated paper covers, silk threads, paper title slips on upper covers. Seika Yamaga (1885-1981) was a weaving master active in Kyoto. Sarasa or calico is a plain woven textile, often not fully processed cotton, coloured and treated with various techniques. Originally it came from the city of Kolikkodu (Calicut) in south western India. It was imported to Japan in the 16th century by the Portugese. The Japanese refined and developed the technique further.
