Size: 39 x 34.2 cm. Printed on very fine paper. A couple of tiny holes and some very minor creasing. A beautiful tea box label printed in stunning and delightful colours, apparently never been used. According to the label the importer is J.M. Crouse & Son, Utila N.Y. After Japan opened the ports to foreign trade in 1859 tea became one of the country's most important export products. At the end of 19th century the American-owned company Smith, Baker & Co (Yokohama and Kobe) was the leader in tea purchase.

Contemporary half cloth on marbled paper boards, title lettered in gilt on spine, somewhat rubbed. Inscriptions to front free endpaper and some annotations in the text. Third edition (first 1888). The first part comprises a vocabulary divided by subjects. The second part contains conversation helpful for visitors and traders to be used in different situations. Scarce. Only one copy of a 1906 edition recorded in OCLC.

First edition of this informative work about the Yoshiwara ("pleasure") district of Edo (Tokyo). The author was an English lawyer who came to Japan in 1887. He assumed Japanese nationality and after a few years set up legal practices in Yokohama and Kobe. This controversial and comprehensive work describes the "Red Light" district of Tokyo and its organization, manners, ceremonies as well as its medical aspects and legal constraints. Not in Cordier. A fascinating informative guide of Nikko, a small city in Tochigi Prefecture situated in the mountains north of Tokyo. It is devoted to the history of Nikko, its Buddhist temples and the famous Shinto shrine Toshugu (Manganji Temple) established in 1617 as a memorial of Togugawa Ieyasu. It was later renamed Rinnoji temple. Includes many woodcut illustrations of Buddhist paintings, interiors such as offering jars, masks and clothing, musical instruments, furnitures, dining utensils, incense burners, offering bowls, screens, pots, lanterns, etc.

Tall 8vo (15 x 22,5 cm). Pp. 28 lvs double folded in the Japanese fashion and two colour woodcut prints highlighted with gold. Text in English, Japanese and Chinese. Original coloured pictorial wrappers highlighted, silk ties. A very attractive programme of a Kabuki play "The Battle of Yashima". The play was arranged in connection with a visit by Prince Pu Lun, the nephew of the Chinese emperor and heir to the throne at the time. Count Got› Shinpei (1857-1929) was a prominent Japanese statesman and cabinet minister. A rare survival in lovely condition.

Second edition enlarged with plates not found in the first edition (1875). Cavalier Pietro Savio of Alessandria (1838-1904) was a member of the Italian Geographic Society and participated in the first official Italian expedition to Japan in 1869. This was a later expedition which visited Yanagawa, Yonezawa, Aizu-Wakamatzu, Nikko, Tokyo and Yokohama. Savio's vividly account describes the country and its people, their manners and customs. The beautiful plates depict views from the countryside, houses, family scenes, various ceremonies and gatherings. Cordier BJ 604.

Julia Carrothers came to Japan as a Presbyterian missionary in 1869 together with her husband. She had a long-standing connection with Japan and Hasegawa after her return to San Diego in 1877. When she returned to Japan in 1903 she provided Hasegawa with the manuscript for this book. A lovely copy of a charming and informative work about Japan and its culture based on the months of the calendar year. The beautiful illustrations are very delicate.

Folio. Pp. (viii), 133. Signed by the author, including one page of calligraphy by him. With 57 samples of handmade paper tipped in together with information and pictures of the factories where the papers were made, arranged by prefecture. Two samples have one small corner cut off (perhaps as issued). Original brown cloth, title in gilt on upper cover and spine. Housed in original cloth folder and original card box (lightly stained). First and only edition, limited to 300 copies, of which this is no. 191. Abe Eishiro (1902-84) had an instrumental role in the preservation of traditional Japanese paper-making techniques and was the first Japanese paper-maker to be designated as a National Living Treasure. He was also an early follower of Yanagi Muneyoshi's Japanese Arts & Crafts Movement. This work includes two pieces of paper made by Abe Eishiro, and one more sample of handmade paper by Ichibei Iwano, another National Living Treasure artist. Only one copy in OCLC (at SOAS).
