First edition of this informative work about the Yoshiwara ("pleasure") district of Edo (Tokyo). The author was an English lawyer who came to Japan in 1887. He assumed Japanese nationality and after a few years set up legal practices in Yokohama and Kobe. This controversial and comprehensive work describes the "Red Light" district of Tokyo and its organisation, manners, ceremonies as well as its medical aspects and legal constraints. Not in Cordier.
