[A collection of ten original post card photographs of Kabuki theatre actors]. Kabukiza 1928.
A set of ten original postcard size photographs, each 14 x 9 cm. Each inscribed on verso in ink with name of the actor, his role and the title of the drama in which he is pictured in costume. Six are dated Kabuki-za 14/4/28 and four are dated 5/10/28. Kabuki-za was the famous 19th century Ginza theatre rebuilt in 1924 after the big earthquake and finally demolished in 2010. Actors included are: Sadanji, Genjiro and Fukusuke Nakamura; Mitsugoro Bando; Utaeyemon [Uzaemon] and Shimbashi Embujo. Kept in original printed envelope from the fashionable department store of the 1920's, Kamigata Ya in Ginza, Tokyo. Rare to find Kabuki actor photographs which are identified and dated like this set.

Size: 39 x 34.2 cm. Printed on very fine paper. A couple of tiny holes and some very minor creasing. A beautiful tea box label printed in stunning and delightful colours, apparently never been used. According to the label the importer is J.M. Crouse & Son, Utila N.Y. After Japan opened the ports to foreign trade in 1859 tea became one of the country's most important export products. At the end of 19th century the American-owned company Smith, Baker & Co (Yokohama and Kobe) was the leader in tea purchase.

Contemporary half cloth on marbled paper boards, title lettered in gilt on spine, somewhat rubbed. Inscriptions to front free endpaper and some annotations in the text. Third edition (first 1888). The first part comprises a vocabulary divided by subjects. The second part contains conversation helpful for visitors and traders to be used in different situations. Scarce. Only one copy of a 1906 edition recorded in OCLC.

The collection comprises vases, coffee sets, bonbon dishes, fruit bowls, tea sets, plates, tea pots, and much more. The objects are printed in vibrant colours including several with gold. The Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd was established in 1904 at Noritake near to Nagoya.

First edition of this informative work about the Yoshiwara ("pleasure") district of Edo (Tokyo). The author was an English lawyer who came to Japan in 1887. He assumed Japanese nationality and after a few years set up legal practices in Yokohama and Kobe. This controversial and comprehensive work describes the "Red Light" district of Tokyo and its organization, manners, ceremonies as well as its medical aspects and legal constraints. Not in Cordier. A fascinating informative guide of Nikko, a small city in Tochigi Prefecture situated in the mountains north of Tokyo. It is devoted to the history of Nikko, its Buddhist temples and the famous Shinto shrine Toshugu (Manganji Temple) established in 1617 as a memorial of Togugawa Ieyasu. It was later renamed Rinnoji temple. Includes many woodcut illustrations of Buddhist paintings, interiors such as offering jars, masks and clothing, musical instruments, furnitures, dining utensils, incense burners, offering bowls, screens, pots, lanterns, etc.

Original coloured pictorial wrappers highlighted, silk ties. A very attractive programme of a Kabuki play "The Battle of Yashima". The play was arranged in connection with a visit by Prince Pu Lun, the nephew of the Chinese emperor and heir to the throne at the time. Count Gotõ Shinpei (1857-1929) was a prominent Japanese statesman and cabinet minister. A rare survival in lovely condition.

Cavalier Pietro Savio of Alessandria (1838-1904) was a member of the Italian Geographic Society and participated in the first official Italian expedition to Japan in 1869. This was a later expedition which visited Yanagawa, Yonezawa, Aizu-Wakamatzu, Nikko, Tokyo and Yokohama. Savio's vividly account describes the country and its people, their manners and customs. The beautiful plates depict views from the countryside, houses, family scenes, various ceremonies and gatherings. Cordier BJ 604.

BRINKLEY, FRANK:

Pp. vi, 352; (iv), 271; (iv), 349, (1) blank, index xxix. With parallel text in English and Japanese. Original printed wrappers, spines and extremities somewhat chipped. First edition of this early guide for Japanese to learn English by themselves. Comprising two parts: 1. Vocabularies listing the character, the English equivalent, the pronunciation and the Katana character; and 2. Sentences in Japanese with the English translation. Captain Frank Brinkley (1841-1912) came to Japan in 1867 as commander of a unit of the Royal Artillery stationed in Yokohama. Later he took up the post of foreign advisor to the new Meji government. He also became proprietor and editor of the English-language newspaper the "Japan Mail" (later merged with the Japan Times). Brinkley wrote several books related to Japanese studies, its history and language. This work seems very rare, no western library copies are found. Two editions of "Shin gogaku hitori annai" (New guide to English self taught) appeared in 1909 and 1911 respectively, probably later prints of this work (listed by Worldcat). Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Tokyo 1965) 2650. Not in Cordier.
