Uncut copy in original pink marbled wrappers, faded and rubbed. Housed in a specially-made half-morocco box. Two plates with small marginal tear, a few leaves with light minor staining but overall a fine and unsophisticated set.Scarce first edition, a second edition in two volumes 8vo was published the following year. The book is devoted to the islands of Indonesia; Sumatra, Java, Sumbawa, Flores and Timor. The description of Polynesia and Australia, announced in the title, is not included. A comprehensive work describing the inhabitants, their customs and manners, languages, religions, costumes, governments, agriculture, arts, trade, industry, etc. The plates depict costumes, views, weapons, music instruments and houses.
