[LIBERTY - FASHION SALES CATALOGUE].
Dress and Decoration. London & Paris, published by Liberty & Co., no date but about 1905.
Folio. Pp. (32). With thirteen large tipped-in colour plates, including eleven of ladies in elaborate dresses and two smaller plates of children's clothing. As issued, stapled, with some rust at inner margin of first few leaves. Original floral decorated green boards by Atelier Devauchelle, title label on upper cover. First and only edition of this glamorous catalogue by the prominent Liberty company. Including plates with women in fashionable dresses set against backgrounds of sophisticated Arts & Crafts interiors. Each design with a detailed description. Foreword by Arthur Fish, renowned British art specialist. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) opened the first shop "The East India House" in 1875 on Regent street in London and sold many items from the Orient including fabrics. Within a few years the oriental fabrics became very popular and to meet the increasing demand the shop (now named Liberty) started to import un-dyed silk, cashmere and cotton fabrics, which were then hand-printed in England, in Eastern style. In 1884, Liberty established a costume department, in which clothing was designed and made from Liberty fabrics. The goal was not to make clothing that followed fashion; it was to make clothing based on historical costume, reinterpreted for the modern wearer as part of the Aesthetic Movement. Liberty was one of the first to embrace the new Art Nouveau style in the mid 1890s. They became known for their textiles in this style, some of which are still produced today (Vintage Fashion Guild).
