Edkins commences with references to three ancient important historical works. He continues to describe the inner city with details about the gates, towers, palaces, parks, wall, temples, altars, etc. He writes about the foreign missions, schools, the Astronomical Observatory, Catholic cemeteries, funeral traditions, and the tombs of famous western missionaries such as Ricci, Loyola, Schaal and others. At end descriptions of the Summer Palace, the Ming tombs and the Great Wall. Joseph Edkins was a British missionary and linguist who served in China for 57 years.
