Otho Fabricius was a Danish missionary who lived in the colony of Fredrikshaab in Greenland between 1768 and 1773. He was a student of another renowned missionary Paul Egede. First French edition, translated from the Italian (Venice 1774). Alberto Fortis was an Augustinian monk and naturalist who travelled in Dalmatia between 1771 and 1774. This work deals with the geology, natural history of the country, and customs and manners of the inhabitants. Interesting descriptions of Zara, Sebenico, Spalato, Macarska, and the islands of Lissa, Pelagosa, Lesina, etc. The plates depict views, native costumes, ruins, fossils etc. At end an appendix: "Iter Buda Hadrianipolim ..." by Antonio Veranzio, Bishop of Buda, about his journey from Budapest to Constantinople in 1553 to conclude a peace treaty on behalf of Ferdinand I with Suleiman the Magnificent, edited by Fortis. First edition of the first primer of the Tatar language, a Turkic language mainly spoken in modern Tatarstan (European Russia) and Siberia. (Not to be confused with Crimean Tatar or Siberian Tatar which are closely related but belong to different subgroups of the Kipchak languages). Rare.Compiled by Niyat Bka Atnometev a Siberian Tatar under the guidance of the priest Iosif Ivanovich Giganov (1764-1800?). Giganov was a teacher at the Tobolsk Seminar and is considered the founder of the modern Tatar dialectology school. He compiled the first Tatar grammar and Russian-Tatar dictionary, published in 1801 and 1804 respectively, posthumously.Provenance: We assume it has belonged to Ebenezer Henderson (1784-1858), Scottish minister and linguist who in 1822 was invited to assist the Russian Bible Society in translations of the Bible into different languages spoken in the Russian empire). A few samples with some very light staining but overall in very good condition. Original bordeaux coloured cloth, blind-stamped with company name within ornamental frame, with paper label on upper cover, somewhat rubbed. Front end papers decorated in Jugend style.A very neat and well-preserved pattern book belonging to the weaving manufacturer Gröger, Mikulaschek & Co., from Sternberg in Moravia, today Sternberk in Czech Republic. Sternberg was an important centre of cotton and silk industry with more than 1000 mechanical weaving looms around 1900.
