Pp. xvi, 383; iii-viii, 458, (4). Half title to volume two not present. With two folding engraved maps and 3 folding engraved plates. Contemporary marbled boards, calf spines decorated in gilt and with title labels, rubbed. Second and revised edition of this valuable account of Syria and Egypt. First published in 4to in the same year. Volney (1757-1820), a distinguished French historian and philosopher, spent three years of travelling within Syria and Egypt. His account contains information about the natural history, politics, commerce, customs and manners, etc. Includes an account of the Arabic press at the convent of Mrkhamra with a catalogue of books printed there. WALLIN, GEORG AUGUST:

Pp. viii, 126, (2) blank. With one lithographed map. Includes Arabic notes to the Swedish text. Marbled boards, title label on upper cover. Bookplate (Victor Procopé, Finnish book collector). This scarce and important work comprises Wallin's manuscript of his first journey through Arabia in 1845 to report on the political developments at a time when the region was seeking independence from Egyptian rule. Posthumously published. Georg Wallin travelled disguised as a horse-dealer across the wastelands of the Nafud Desert to Jubbah and Ha'il. From there he joined a group of Persian pilgrims to Mecca. By 1850 Wallin had returned to Europe, where the Royal Geographical Society published his "Notes taken during a Journey through part of Northern Arabia" and awarded him the Founder's Medal in recognition of his ground-breaking research. Small 8vo. Pp. (xvi) including one blank leaf, 423, (17). Contemporary calf, gilt spine with five raised bands and title label, expertly rebacked with original spine preserved. First edition of Wansleben's narrative of his second journey to Egypt. Johann Michael Wansleben (1635 -79) was a German theologian and linguist. In 1670 in the service of Jean-Baptist Colbert he planned a second journey to Ethiopia, but once again went no further than Egypt. He travelled extensively in Egypt for about a year and came as far south as Sohag. His account is one of the earliest of Upper Egypt.
