BLAKISTON, THOMAS WRIGHT:
Five Months on the Yang-tsze; with a Narrative of the Exploration of its Upper Waters, and Notices of the Present Rebellions in China. London, J. Murray, 1862.
. Pp. xiv, (ii), 380. With frontispiece, 15 wood engraved plates, two folding maps, seven text illustrations and one specimen page from the author's field-book. Occasionally some staining. Publisher's gilt cloth, faded and extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplate (J. Leveson Gower). First edition of a scarce work which for many years was considered the standard of the region including an accurate map of the river from Hankow to Pingshan. Thomas W. Blakiston (1832-91) was a British army officer and naturalist who was posted to Canton during the second Opium War in 1859. He organised an exploration of the middle and upper course of the Yang-tsze-Kiang in 1861. The mission was to ascend the river as far as the Min, and then cross the province of Szechuan, and reach north-western India via Tibet and Lhasa. The party reached Pingshan after having travelled eighteen hundred miles from Shanghai which was further than any other European explorer before them. This narrative contains interesting information about the country including the fauna and flora, and also comments on the politically volatile situation in China at the time. The illustrations are by Alfred Barton. Cordier BS 121. Löwendahl 1263.

[A manuscript copy] "Ogasawara ryû shorei no shiki" (The Ogasawara School of Etiquette). Nine volumes. Late Edo period (ca 1800).
. Comprises nine volumes of hand-written text and hand-drawn illustrations, of which several coloured. Ink on fine paper, bound in the fukuro-toji style in original blue wrappers with title labels. Stamps of Nihon Budo Bunka Kyokai (Japan Martial Arts Culture Association) on front covers. Volumes vary slightly in size between 22.8 x 17.1 cm and 24.5 x 18.3 cm. Some staining to the covers and some minor worming to a few volumes but overall a very good set. Housed in a specially made decorated paper box.The Ogasawara School originated in the Kamakura period (12th century) and laid the foundations of etiquette for the samurai class in Japan. It specialised in teaching archery techniques and horse training. The school developed over centuries and from its rich past of warrior martial techniques the Ogasawara-ryû tradition of etiquette evolved. The etiquette teaches proper behaviour in different life situations and in ceremonial rituals, such as performing a bow, arrangements of banquets, serving manners, making gift boxes, wedding preparations, instructions for noshi, clothing and make-up, etc. etc. Mizushima Bokuya (1607-94) was a teacher of etiquette and his written Ogasawara work mainly circulated in manuscript form in the second half of the 17th century.
