A lovely copy of the first edition.Carl Fredrik Liljevalch (1796-1840) was a successful merchant who was sent to China to find out about trading possibilities and to negotiate a treaty of commerce. He travelled with an East India Company ship leaving London in January 1845 via Egypt and Bombay arriving at Singapore in July the same year. He made short journeys to Java and Batavia. In October 1845 he arrived in Canton and he also visited Macao, Shanghai and the other important Chinese harbours. His account contains an accurate description of the Chinese culture and economy, the monetary system and banks, and about the trading of commodities: opium, metals, forest products, tea, silk, cotton, oils and whale fishing. Also includes the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Sweden/Norway and China concluded in 1847. Contains short sections on Japan and Siam. Cordier BS 86 & BJ 505.
