Publisher's decorated cloth, light wear to extremities. A narrative of Church's travels through Turkestan in 1899-90 together with his friend J.V. Phelps. The aim of the journey was to try and shoot the Altai Wapiti, the great stag of the Tian Shan, ibex and roe deer. The route taken included Leh, Yarkand, Aksu, Shatta, Kuldja, and Khotan. Sven Hedin rediscovered Loulan in 1899/1900 and found a wooden Kharosthi tablet and many Chinese manuscripts from the late Hand dynasty which are described in this work. A separate work but is included in Hedin's scientific work entitled: "Scientific results of a journey in Central Asia 1899-1902", as part 6:iv. Hess p. 49.

Oblong 8vo. Pp. xiv, 66, 65-88, 87-185 + one leaf with the "Pa Kua", 61 coloured lithograph plates of peddlers, 16 tipped-in photographic illustrations, one paper pattern and one diagram. Original silk-covered boards with printed title label on upper cover. Housed in the original decorated paper case. First edition of this charming and informative work on street peddlers in Peking. It describes 54 different kinds of peddlers including their characteristic sound or call, and what they have to sell, buy, exchange or other service they offer to their customers. Each is accompanied with an illustration of the peddler himself and his commodity. A few examples: the melon seed peddler; "feet fixer"; "moon cake" peddler; travelling magicians, "bundle cake" peddler, "used silver" buyer, and different kinds of fortune tellers. Constant submitted this work to the California College in China as part of a Degree of Master of Arts. (April 1936). A beautiful copy in the rare original folder.

Séraphin Couvreur (1835-1919), French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien where he was professor at the Seminary. He complied several Chinese dictionaries and translated many of the Chinese classical works. Couvreur was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. Contemporary brown morocco, ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt with five raised bands, marbled endpapers, corners worn. Provenance: Bibliotheca Tiliana with bookplate and small stamps at beginning and end. First edition of this magnificent work which is the first substantial work on the subject. Dabry de Thiersant was French consul in Shanghai and Canton in the 1860s and an active collector of zoological specimens during this time. His work treats the fishing culture in China including descriptions of fishing gear and different species of fish. Thirty-six of the plates depict numerous illustrations of fishing nets and other equipment, and the other plates illustrate a vast number of various types of fish accompanied with detailed descriptions. Dabry de Thiersant found 850 different species of fish in the Far East, of which many were unknown to European naturalists at the time. Some light staining to the plates but overall a wonderful copy of a scare title. Not in Löwendahl. Cordier BS 1537. Nissen ZB1, 1018.

Part one comprises the vocabulary proper containing more than 175 000 Chinese characters which have been romanized according to Wade's system of spelling the sounds in Peking Mandarin. The second part consists of more than 10 000 clauses and phrases in English and Chinese. The third part contains tables and lists of terms and phrases contributed by missionaries, consular people and other residents in China. This is a narrative of a voyage to South Africa, India and China. The author was a Swedish medical doctor and professor in anatomy and physiology. He was particulary interested in the natural history of the places he visited. The voyage went to the Cape and from there continued to Mocambique, Zanzibar, Aden (Yemen), Muskat, Bombay, Singapore before reaching Macao and (Whampoa) Canton. His interesting description of Canton contains information about crops and vegetation, opium smoking and its trade, foot binding, tea and bamboo, medical practices, pirates, etc. Cordier BS 2505. An account of missionary activities and persecution of five Spanish martyrs and some Chinese Christians in Fujian province of China. Pedro Sanz came to China in 1715 and served as a missionary for 31 years. In 1730 he was appointed vicar apostolic of Fukien and titular bishop of Mauricasto. Together with the other four Spanish Dominicians; Francesco Serrano, Joaquin Royo, Juan Alcober and Francisco Diaz he was imprisoned in 1746. Sanz was executed in 1747 and the others in 1748. This is an enlarged version of a work titled: "La christiandad de Fogan en la provincia de Fo kien en el Imperio de China cruelmente perseguida ... " published in Manila 1748. Cordier BS 1210. A rare, comprehensive work on the Gengzhitu or "the Procedures of Agriculture and Silk-Production" in China. Franke provides a complete translation of the 1696 edition commissioned by the Kangxi emperor and furthermore gives a detailed comparison to the Japanese edition of 1676 which was based on the Sung-dynasty edition by Lou Shou. Agriculture and silk production held a special place in China and both occupations were regarded as paramount for the well-being of the state. Included in "Abhandlungen des Hamburgischen Kolonialinstitut". Not in Cordier.
