Contemporary half calf, recased, rubbed. With old ownership signatures and red chops. A copy of a scholar, thumb indexed and with many pencil annotations. First edition. The authors, two German born sinologists developed a system of transliteration for Chinese to German, called the Lessing-Othmer system. A third part called "Kurzgefassten übersicht der Gesamheit der grammatischen Erscheinungen" was planned but was never published.

. Pp. viii, 407. With 6 plates, of which 4 are coloured lithographs. Copy with wide margins, front edge untrimmed. Contemporary half calf, flat spine with blind stamped decoration and title lettered in gilt. Bookplate (Carl Jedvard Bonde). Copy of Ericsberg. A lovely copy of the first edition. Carl Fredrik Liljevalch (1796-1840) was a successful merchant who was sent to China to find out about trading possibilities and to negotiate a treaty of commerce. He travelled with an East India Company ship leaving London in January 1845 via Egypt and Bombay arriving at Singapore in July the same year. He made short journeys to Java and Batavia. In October 1845 he arrived in Canton and he also visited Macao, Shanghai and the other important Chinese harbours. His account contains an accurate description of the Chinese culture and economy, the monetary system and banks, and about the trading of commodities: opium, metals, forest products, tea, silk, cotton, oils and whale fishing. Also includes the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Sweden/Norway and China concluded in 1847. Contains short sections on Japan and Siam. Cordier BS 86 & BJ 505.

Provenance: A.W. Danforth (together with his wife) came to China in 1882. He was an expert and advisor to the Shanghai Cotton Cloth Mill, China's first factory producing cloth with modern machinery, and the founder of the Xinwenbao newspaper in Shanghai in 1893.

Wrappers."During an expedition made in Central Asia and Northern China in the years 1906-1908 I had the opportunity of spending some days among the Sarö and Shera Yögurs, two small tribes which under the northern reaches of the Nanshan mountains in the district of Kanchow-Hsüchow, and part of the plain at its foot. In the hope of assisting in spreading some light upon these imperfectly known races, I offer some extracts from my journal, a vocabulary of words noted down parallely, as used by both tribes, some anthropoligical measurements and a number of photographs, some of which were taken during my expedition, others representing an ethnographical collection which I made". . Small 8vo. Pp. 156, (3). With one folding map "Situs provinciarum imperii sinici 1654". Contemporary or near contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands and red title label, rubbed, top of spine chipped. A few leaves with marginal stain. Scarce first edition of this important work about the history of the Manchu invasion and conquest of the Chinese empire in the first half of the 17th century. This work became enormously popular at the time, printed and translated many times. Martini was an Italian-born Jesuit, historian and cartographer who spent many years in China during which time he travelled extensively throughout the country. Martini is considered to be the first European to study the history and geography of China with accurate scientific objectivity. On behalf of the mission he travelled to Rome in 1654 but returned to China after a few years. He died of cholera in the Hangzhou area in 1661. Cordier BS 623. De Backer & Sommervogel V, 647. The characters are printed in red, green, yellow, blue and black respectively. Original black cloth, expertly rebacked with red calf printed in gilt. Third edition (first 1892). Calvin Mateer died in Tsingtao in 1908 after 44 years of missionary work in China. He was devoted to teaching and produced several literary works. He founded the first 19th century Chinese Christian College; Tengchow College. Cordier 1705.

[A catalogue of contemporary art at the National Fine Art Exhibition - Modern Art]. Shanghai 1929.
. Folio. Size: 38 x 26 cm. Lvs (10) with Chinese text + 168 pages with ca 290 reproductions and photos (48 full page) + 6 lvs with intermittent section-caption. Original decorated silk (over paper) covers with stiched Chinese and English titles on upper cover, visible strings, chipped along edges. This catalogue of contemporary art (which appeared as part of a two volume catalogue, the other volume covering ancient art) was issued in connection with the National Fine Art Exhibition at Shanghai in 1929. It was the first officially organized Chinese national art exhibition which took seven years to prepare. The contemporary paintings at the show were divided into a "Western" section including landscape by Liu Haisu, a female nude by Pan Yuliang, modernist figures by Fengmian and Cai Weilian, etc. The "Chinese" section contained paintings ranging from works by well known classicists Gu Linshi, Feng Chaoran, and Wu Hufan, to those of Western influences reformists such as Gao Jianfu and Chen Shuren.

MORRISON, ROBERT:

Original edition of Morrison's account which was published in the periodical "The Pamphleteer" (15). The following year it was published as a separate work in London (edited by John Morton). Reverend Robert Morrison was born in Scotland and was the first protestant missionary to China where he served for 27 years. He became famous for his linguistic abilities and served as Secretary and interpreter on Lord Amherst's embassy to Peking in 1816. "But though this work assumes only the unimposing garb of a pamphlet, it will be found to contain copious and entertaining descriptions of the manners and customs of the Chinese; and, in the narration of events which transpired in the course of the Embassy, it exhibits many striking traits in the national character of that singular people" (John Morton). She married a Methodist missionary and moved to China where she taught at the McTyeire School for Young Ladies in Shanghai and at Soochow University. She died in Shanghai in 1940.
