. Large 8vo. viii, 588. Publisher's cloth, extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplate (Richard S. Björkdal, Swedish missionary to China). A collection of anecdotes and conversations of the Confucian thinker and philosopher Mencius. He was a disciple of one of the students of Zisi, a gandson of Confucius. Here together with Legge's English translation. Included in the series "The Chinese Classics" which was first published 1861 in Hong Kong. Cordier BS 1367. Cf. Löwendahl 1259 (first edition).

Contemporary half calf, recased, rubbed. With old ownership signatures and red chops. A copy of a scholar, thumb indexed and with many pencil annotations. First edition. The authors, two German born sinologists developed a system of transliteration for Chinese to German, called the Lessing-Othmer system. A third part called "Kurzgefassten übersicht der Gesamheit der grammatischen Erscheinungen" was planned but was never published.

. Pp. viii, 407. With 6 plates, of which 4 are coloured lithographs. Copy with wide margins, front edge untrimmed. Contemporary half calf, flat spine with blind stamped decoration and title lettered in gilt. Bookplate (Carl Jedvard Bonde). Copy of Ericsberg. A lovely copy of the first edition. Carl Fredrik Liljevalch (1796-1840) was a successful merchant who was sent to China to find out about trading possibilities and to negotiate a treaty of commerce. He travelled with an East India Company ship leaving London in January 1845 via Egypt and Bombay arriving at Singapore in July the same year. He made short journeys to Java and Batavia. In October 1845 he arrived in Canton and he also visited Macao, Shanghai and the other important Chinese harbours. His account contains an accurate description of the Chinese culture and economy, the monetary system and banks, and about the trading of commodities: opium, metals, forest products, tea, silk, cotton, oils and whale fishing. Also includes the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Sweden/Norway and China concluded in 1847. Contains short sections on Japan and Siam. Cordier BS 86 & BJ 505.

Wester (1858). A narrative by a French lady about her adventurous voyage via California to China during the years 1852-54. On the return journey after leaving Hong Kong the ship was attacked by Chinese pirates and all the passengers and crew were taken prisoners. Cordier BS 1902.

Comprises several articles on foreign-Chinese relations, the city of Shanghai, Chinese customs, theatre, and a journey on the Yang-Tsze-Kiang from Shanghai to Hankow. Scarce. Cordier BS 2218. Provenance: A.W. Danforth (together with his wife) came to China in 1882. He was an expert and advisor to the Shanghai Cotton Cloth Mill, China's first factory producing cloth with modern machinery, and the founder of the Xinwenbao newspaper in Shanghai in 1893.

Wrappers."During an expedition made in Central Asia and Northern China in the years 1906-1908 I had the opportunity of spending some days among the Sarö and Shera Yögurs, two small tribes which under the northern reaches of the Nanshan mountains in the district of Kanchow-Hsüchow, and part of the plain at its foot. In the hope of assisting in spreading some light upon these imperfectly known races, I offer some extracts from my journal, a vocabulary of words noted down parallely, as used by both tribes, some anthropoligical measurements and a number of photographs, some of which were taken during my expedition, others representing an ethnographical collection which I made".
