. Tall 8vo. Pp. (ii), 500, (1) errata. Includes several slip cancels. With one double page table: "Tabula synoptica phoneticarum omnium". Uncut copy, as issued, in original yellow printed wrappers. Title page restored at inner margin (no loss). Volume two only, but comprising the complete dictionary: "Ordines phonetico-alphabetici quibus sinensium litterae circumscribuntur" with 12 753 characters arranged under phonetics instead of under their radicals. Text in Chinese, Latin and French. First edition. Calleri (1810 - 76 ) arrived at Macao in 1836 where he resided for some years and studied natural sciences and Chinese under the renowned sinologist Joachim Alfonso Gonçalves. Calleri set up his own printing press, bought a small set of types, and with the help of six natives he was able to produce this important work. . 4to. Pp. (ii), xxxii, 199 + pp. 98 with Chinese lithographed text. Contemporary roan with elaborated decoration in gilt on covers and spine, g.e., marbled endpapers. A specially made binding with gilt inscription "New Year's gift. A.S.". Partly with some minor staining but otherwise a very good copy. First edition. It's a translation of parts of the Li Ki (Book of Rites), which is one of the Five Chinese Classics and comprises texts about Chinese religious practices from the eighth to the fifth century B.C. The text includes numerous information of the Chinese culture from ancient time. Calleri (1810-76) moved to Macau in 1836 where he studied Chinese under the renowned sinologist Joachim Alfonso Gonçalves. The first complete translation of the Li Ki was made by James Legge and appeared in 1885. Cordier BS 1383. Löwendahl 1137.

His scientific works were published after his death by Schiefner supported by the Scientific Academy in Petersburg under the series title "Nordische reisen und Forschungen" (1853-62). The aim of the journey was to try and shoot the Altai Wapiti, the great stag of the Tian Shan, ibex and roe deer. The route taken included Leh, Yarkand, Aksu, Shatta, Kuldja, and Khotan. The voyage went via the Cape, Bourbon, New Caledonia, to Manilla, Cochinchina, Japan, China, and stopped in Singapore before it returned to Europe. . 4to. Pp. xvi, 194. With 53 plates. Half green leather. The ancient city of Loulan (in today's Xinjiang) became an important trading center on the silk road but suddenly vanished in the 5th century. Sven Hedin rediscovered Loulan in 1899/1900 and found a wooden Kharosthi tablet and many Chinese manuscripts from the late Hand dynasty which are described in this work. A separate work but is included in Hedin's scientific work entitled: "Scientific results of a journey in Central Asia 1899-1902", as part 6:iv. Hess p. 49.

. Oblong 8vo. Pp. xiv, 66, 65-88, 87-185 + one leaf with the "Pa Kua", 61 coloured lithograph plates of peddlers, 16 tipped-in photographic illustrations, one paper pattern and one diagram. Original silk-covered boards with printed title label on upper cover. Housed in the original decorated paper case. First edition of this charming and informative work on street peddlers in Peking. It describes 54 different kinds of peddlers including their characteristic sound or call, and what they have to sell, buy, exchange or other service they offer to their customers. Each is accompanied with an illustration of the peddler himself and his commodity. A few examples: the melon seed peddler; "feet fixer"; "moon cake" peddler; travelling magicians, "bundle cake" peddler, "used silver" buyer, and different kinds of fortune tellers. Constant submitted this work to the California College in China as part of a Degree of Master of Arts. (April 1936). A beautiful copy in the rare original folder.
