BEAVER, CAPTAIN PHILIP:

With one large folding map "Nautical map intended for the use of colonial undertakings" (with small tear at fold) and two engraved plates of Beaver's "Block House" on the island of Bulama. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original red title label, front hinge cracking, lower hinge loose. With some minor staining and a few leaves with dust-soiling. First edition. Beaver participated in this British mission aiming for a colonization of the island of Bulama near Sierra Leone. The expedition was badly executed and a failure. Beaver stayed on for 18 months to make settlement a success but many of the colonists died and the remaining abandoned the colony. The large map was orginally composed by C.B. Wadström, but here revised by Beaver. Gay 3196.

Publisher's green cloth, decorated in gilt, beautiful marbled end papers. First edition. A very good copy. Bertrand was a Swiss geographer and photographer who made many ethnographical trips around the world. This account is about a journey to the Barotseland and the Zambezi basin, today located in western Zambia. Bertand's account based on his diary describes the different places he visited, its people, and hunting experiences of buffalo, wildebeest and lion. Includes also the return journey via Victoria Falls, Matabeleland (Zimbabwe), the Transvaal, Natal and the Cape. Czech p.16. Mendelssohn I, pp. 119-20.

Bowdich and eighteen monochrome engraved plates, of which ten devoted to natural history specimens, seven about fish and one linguistic plate. Contemporary half calf, rebacked with original spine preserved, rubbed. Old signature on title. Two small holes on title without any text loss. Bookplate. Some browning and staining throughout. First edition of this interesting work on Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands mainly devoted to geology, zoology and botany. Bowdich, born in 1791, participated in several voyages to Africa but died on this mission only 33 years old at Bathurst (Banjul) when he was about to undertake a trigonometric survey of the Gambia region. . Small 8vo. Pp. 108. With one folding plate of Eliza Bradley on a camel brought into captivity, and one more plate in the text. Modern paper wrappers. According to the narrative Eliza Bradley set sail with her husband in the ship Sally, heading for Teneriffe in the spring of 1818. About five weeks later the ship was lost on the coast of Morocco. Mrs. Bradley was separated from her husband and held captive for six months by the Arabs before ransomed by the British consul. Most likely a fictive account and partly influenced by James Riley's account of life among the Arabs. First published in 1820, reprinted many times. Robinson, Wayward Women, pp. 276-77.

Second amended edition (first 1815).Campbell was a Scottish missionary who was sent to South Africa in 1812 to inspect the mission stations there after the death of John Theodosius van der Kemp, Governor of Bethelsdorp. Campbell travelled extensively throughout the country for nine months to visit the different settlements. He came in contact with various tribes, many previously unreached, and the Boer settlers.
