. 4to. Pp. (xii) including first blank leaf, 378, (2). With engraved frontispiece, one large folding map (small tear) and six uncoloured aquatint plates. Contemporary calf, gilt fillets on covers, edges rubbed, rebacked. Beautiful marbled end papers and edges. Some very light offsetting from plates and partly upper margin with some light staining. First English edition published in the same year as the first French. Mollien, a French diplomat, was one of the earliest European explorers of the West African interior. He came to Senegal in 1817 and the following year he travelled across Senegal and Gambia and discovered the sources of the Senegal and Gambia rivers. Interesting account of the different tribes he met along the route. Includes some pages with vocabularies of Joloff and Poula languages. Abbey, Travel, 273. Gay 2910.

With dedication to Pope Julius III with his coat of arms as woodcut vignette on title page. Title page restored (slight loss of one letter) and two more leaves with marginal repairs without any loss of text. Some minor browning and small marginal wormholes. Contemporary limp vellum, top of spine restored, title in manuscript on spine and library ink marks. Library stamp on title.Scarce first edition of this trustworthy account of Charles V's campaigns against the Turkish corsair Dragut (Turgut Reis) who was based at Mahdia on the Tunisian coast, and made it the centre of his piracy activities. First edition, second issue, of a scarce Swedish work. Padenheim joined the Sierra Leone Company in London in 1790. Two years later he, together with three other Swedes (August Nordenskjöld, Adam Afzelius and Jacob Strand) came to Sierra Leone with the mission to establish a "free slave" colony there. This work comprises five letters by Padenheim, of which four are written at Freetown 1792-95. The letters contain information aboutthe slave trade in Surinam, the establishment of the Sierra Leone Company in London, the building of Freetown, its plan and system of government, the Nova Scotians or the Settlers, problems and conflicts in the settlement, surrounding communities, the climate, house construction, African religion, farming, trade, clothing, weaving and dyeing, etc. See Dahlgren, Carl Bernard Wadström, NTBB 1915, p. 40. Bound in contemporary cloth, rubbed. With original printed wrappers with bound. Text printed in an orthographic system developed by Protestant missionaries in the 1820s. Several are translated from French and English. Most of them are biblical translations or commentaries on the Bible. A few are devoted to Assyrian Christianity, the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, and early Christian reformers including Girolamo Savonarola, John Huss and John Wycliffe. A very unusual collection, a rare survivor.
