Contemporary half calf, spine gilt, slightly rubbed. Bookplate. First edition. A narrative of travels in Asia by a Swedish naval officer serving the British naval service for three years (1857-59). Some places visited were the Cap, Singapore, Hong Kong, Calcutta and Ceylon.

With gilt armorial stamp of Jacques-Auguste II de Thou on covers (combined with the arms of Gasparde la Chastre, his second wife). Armorial ink stamp on title page. Title waterstained, some staining to the text, and browning. One leaf (B4) restored at margin with loss of a few letters and final leaf (with index) repaired with loss of a few letters on its recto. First edition of this account of the Madura mission by an Italian Jesuit. Giancinto de Magistris (1605-68), served for several years in the province of Malabar in South India. . Tall 8vo. Pp. xxxix, 120. Interleaved copy. With some annotations. Contemporary half calf, rubbed, spine with red title label and initials F.A.H. in gilt at foot of spine. The N’ti-Nighanduva is a Sinhalese law book which mainly deals with marriage and inheritance laws. The kingdom of Kandy was an independent monarchy in the central portion of the island Ceylon, absorbed into the British empire in 1815. The Sinhalese writer Pa'nabokke Banda, President of Dumbara, obtained a copy of the original English manuscript, had it transcribed and made a rough translation. In 1876 Le Mesurier seized the ms, retranslated it and recast it into its present form. Both the transcription and the translation are found in this work. Rare. Provenance: Frederic Austin Hayley with his bookplate on front pastedown. Author of "A treatise of the laws and customs of the Sinhalese" Colombo 1923.

With gilt coat of arms of the University Club of Edinburgh on upper cover, its bookplate on front paste down and a blindstamp to the verso of title. Rare first edition, a second was published in 1857, of this comprehensive dictionary comprising some 40 000 words.James Thomas Molesworth (1795-1871) was a military officer in the service of the British East India Company and one of the most prominent lexicographers of the Marathi language. In 1825, he was stationed in Bombay and began work on a Marathi - English dictionary with the help of twin brothers George and Thomas Candy (serving as translators at the British East India Company in India) and a team of native Marathi-speaking Brahmins. The work explains the priority of the Capuchin mission in the area and criticises the conduct and actions of the Jesuits claiming that they infringed on Capuchin territory, jurisdiction etc. Two years later he published another better known work "Mémoires historiques sur les missions des Indes". Both his works caused scandals.

. Pp. (xxiv), 419; (ii), 510; (ii), 460, (7); (ii), 342. Contemporary red morocco, gilt floral dentelles on covers, spines decorated in gilt, g.e., worn, hinges cracked, spine ends chipped. Second French edition (first 1744) of this critical account of the Jesuit mission in India which caused a scandal. Père Norbert (1697-1769), which is a pseydonym for Abbé Platel, became a Capuchin in 1716. He went to Pondicherry as Attorney General of Foreign Missions in 1736. This work is a very detailed account of the Jesuit mission at Malabar between 1660 and 1744. It is criticizing the conduct and actions of the Jesuit throughout. Includes much information about the Indians, their customs etc. "Describes the proceeedings of the Jesuits in the Malabar Mission, where they authorized the most blasphemous mixture of the Christian and Pagan rites" (Sabin).
