Boston, Small,Maynard and Company. 1923. Hard Cover. This is a very good hardcover copy in the very scarce pictorial dust jacket. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front endpaper. The book is very clean inside and out. No marks to text or plates. The jacket is about 95% there, but chipped around the top edges, mostly the rear panel. Top of spine chipped too. Illustrated in black & white with numerous photographs of period style furnishing. Winnifred Fales became famous in the period between the wars, for her staunch opposition to any kind of modern design. From her position as an editor with the journal Good Housekeeping, she tirelessly campaigned against first art nouveau and then the rush of even more modern design like art deco. In her weekly columns she dispensed advice to readers about how to maintain standards of good taste and decor in the home. 10 1/2" high X 8" wide, 295 pages. Josef Maria Auchentaller (1865 - 1949) was an Austrian painter, draftsman, and printmaker associated with the Vienna Secession and the Art Nouveau style. Auchentaller was a contributor to the magazine Ver Sacrum, a Secessionist publication, and sat on its editorial board between 1900- 1901. His circle of Viennese artists and designers included Otto Wagner. Hundreds of color illustrations of his paintings, drawings, lithographs and jewellery. This is a fine softcover copy with no wear at all, with the scarce specially designed bag to carry it in. The catalog and bag were designed by Shin Ikeda and Toshiko Miyoshi. The clear plastic bag has a white front panel with a clear oval near the top, this reveals the printed title of the catalog to show through. The title is also printed in clear letters at the bottom of the white front panel. Text in English. This catalog was prepared to accompany the traveling exhibition which started at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo, Japan from October 1 to November 16, 1997. The show then went to two other museums in Japan, two museums in Germany and the Corning Museum of Glass in the summer of 1998. The three curators of this exhibition were Susanne K. Frantz from the Corning Museum, Helmut Ricke at Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf, and Yoriko Mizuta at the Hokkaido Museum. They decided to invite 20 artists from 9 countries who were working with glass to address the theme of 'the glass skin'. Each artist was represented by several pieces. Biographical sketches of each artist, including exhibition history, awards. Illustrated throughout in color. 12" high X 9" wide, 149 pages.
