With associated newspaperr cuttings, illustatred admiralty gretings/christam cards reproducing engravings and a 1923 2p typewritten adiscourse on the Grinling Gibbons carving on either side of the Admiralty Board Room Mantel-Piece. Clearly bound for the Admiralty House library with stamps. Half leather folio with filing number on front board. Some fingermarks, well thumbed and one gutter split but remains tight; edges worn. Concertina folding plates include a wide panorama of the Loch Promenade Douglas with trams, carriages and crowds of people! 16 pages of plates in total with another panorama of Douglas from Douglas head with many boats in the harbour. Smaller photos of Port Errin, railway on Snaefell etc. Tight and clean - would be nesar fine but for a 1.5cm snag on edge of rear board. Not affecting platesresr. Very Good -/No Jacket.

Alexander Russel (or sometimes Russell) FRSE (1814-1876) was a Scottish newspaper editor, who spent nearly 30 years as the editor of The Scotsman. His editorial line supported the Anti-Corn-law League, and drew attention to the destitution of the Highlands. Detailed coverage of infectious diseases (Influenza, Tuberculosis, Venereal disease, Smallpox, Encephalitis lethargica, sanitary administration; Maternity and Child Welfare, Nursing, School health administration, Highlands and Islands Medical Service Fund, Welfare of the Blind, Inspection and supervision of Food, Housing and Town Planning, National Health Insurance, Poor Law, Local Government, Old Age Pensions and etc. Much detail - for example: Smallpox outbreak in Glasgow in 1920, Anthrax caught from Japanese shaving brushes,,Age incidence of Rheumatism ( Rheumatoid Arthritis). There is much focus ion the surge of veneral disease after WWI and the new disease Encephalitis Lethargica. Little information about the tale end of the 1917 flu epidemic but mention of anti-influenza vaccines. Distress in the Outer Hebrides - unemployment, failed potato crop and herring fishery; drinking of methylated spirit; infectious disease nofifications; stranding of Whales in the Dornoch Firth - public health issues; Lochaber Water Power Scheme- health of the workers; ultra violet irradiation for Pulmonary TB and etc. The set are in VG condition - however several volumes have missing fep's and there is deterioration in the cloth along the top edge of the 1927 and 1924 volumes.
