In 1837 the side-wheel steamer SS Central America carrying nearly 500 passengers returning from the California Gold Rush. foundered in a hurricane and sank 200 miles off the Carolina coast. 400 died and 21 tons of gold were lost. In the 1980s a young engineer set out to establish a working presence on the deep-ocean floor and open it to science and the SS Central America became the target of his project.
