Comprehensive treatment of the gunpowder industry from its beginning shortly after Maine became a state until its end in. the early 20th century. Extensive use of maps, photos, and drawings. Mills in the 19th century were built where they could use water power, such as in Gorham, Windham, North Buckfield-Sumner, Camden and Warren. There are 3 major types of black powder: military, for rifles and cannons used in warfare; blasting for use in mines, quarries, clearing land of stumps and rocks, preparing railroads cuts, etc.; and sporting powder for hunting. The industry was hazardous with frequent loss of life and property. Library markings, first blank page removed.
