Image of the frontier seen in these paintings came out of the artist's consciously assumed role as an illustrator of American western life. It began with his earliest artistic efforts, all his scenes of flatboatmen, fur traders, raftsmen, woodboatmen, and politicians. His personalization of frontier life made Bingham probably the most popular and most valued artist of our mid-19th century west. Laid in article from The Christian Science Monitor about the art collection of Norton Simon, who played a major role in establishing a new art museum in Los Angeles.
