Granta 116: Ten Years Later (Granta: The Magazine of New Writing).
Granta Publications Ltd, UK. First Edition, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9781905881352 256 pages. Available Now. Book Description: Ten years later, where are we looking? How do we see things differently? From Ground Zero to Kampala to London to Mumbai, the echoes are still heard, the impact is still felt. The way we interact, the way we travel, our relationship to media and technology, and the very way we regard the world we live in have all been irrevocably changed. Granta 116 will examine the consequences of the attacks that occurred on 11 September 2001 from a global perspective. Rather than recounting where we were when it happened and what we saw, this issue will look at how our lives and viewpoints have been altered since that day. Declan Walsh reports from the tribal areas of northwest Pakistan: breeding ground for Al Qaeda and target of U.S. drone strikes. Elliott Woods travels across the US, talking to recruits, noncombatants and veterans and taking the pulse of a nation a decade at war. Pico Iyer considers what air travel is like in the post-9/11 security state; Nicole Krauss writes a melancholy, impressionistic portrait of family, war, life and death in Paris. Adam Johnson and Nuruddin Farah provide extracts from forthcoming novels: in Johnson's, the 'third mate' on a North Korean fishing trawler listens in on mysterious radio transmissions; in Farah's, a father pleads with a Somali warlord for help finding his runaway son. Showcasing some of the most insightful essayists, fiction writers, poets and visual artists working today, Ten Years Later will explore the complexity of how we regard an event that forever shifted our conceptions of fear, anger and hope. : About the Author: John Freeman has been editor of Granta since 2009. He is the author of The Tyranny of E-Mail and former president of the National Book Critics Circle. His criticism has appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian and the Independent. Size: 1.9 x 14.6 x 21 cm. 256 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Fiction; Paperback; ISBN: 1905881355. ISBN/EAN: 9781905881352. Inventory No: B203-1115.

The Lost Diary Of Don Juan: An account of the True Arts of Passion and the Pe.
Phoenix, UK, 2008. First Edition, Softcover. New. 9780753823699 336 pages. Available Now. Book Description: An editor receives a manuscript purporting to be the lost diary of history's greatest lover, Don Juan. An orphan left on the steps of a covent, Don Juan grew up within the church but his ambitions towards the priesthood fell to the wayside when he was seduced by a young nun. Evicted from the convent, he was taken under the wing of the libertine Don Pedro, the Marquis of Mota, who coached him in skills both courtly and amorous and then employed him as a spy at court. So began a life devoted to giving and receiving pleasure. But Abrams' Don Juan is no playboy; instead Don Juan's mastery of the arts of passion liberates the women he beds. Through his connections with Don Pedro, he is made an 'hidalgo', an honorary nobleman, and is therefore protected from the wrath of the Inquisition by the King, but his position is precarious. Then Don Juan embarks on the most perilous adventure of all - he falls in love, and finds that not only his reputation but also his life is in danger. : Book Description: The adventures of Don Juan, history's greatest lover : About the Author: Doug Abrams was for many years an editor at the University of California Press and HarperSanFranciso. ADAMS, BELLA
Amy Tan: Contemporary World Writers.
Manchester University Press, UK, 2005. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition. 9780719062063 232 Pages. Back of the board is a little marked. This is the most comprehensive study to date of Amy Tan's work. It offers close readings of her texts in the context of broader debates about the representation of identity, history and reality. In contrast with Tan's own American-born narrators, and mainstream critics, Bella Adams's study looks beyond the stereotypes which appear in Tan's books, and explores the ways in which Chinese immigrants and their American relatives struggle to understand each others' 'best qualities', via the Chinese tradition of the 'talk story'. She emphasises Tan's American narrators' process of becoming Chinese and discovering 'real China', and the significance of the ironic staging of these moments. Students will find this study both accessible and probing, and scholars will welcome its contribution to our understanding of a important figure in contemporary literature. ADAMSON, GIL
The Outlander
Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, UK. First Edition, Softcover. New. 9780747598770 400 pages. Available Now. Book Description: On a moonlit night in 1903, a mysterious young woman flees alone across the Canadian wilderness, one quick step ahead of her pursuers. Mary Boulton is nineteen years old, half mad, and widowed - by her own hand. Tearing through the forest with dogs howling in the distance, she is desperate, her nerves burning, and she is certain of one thing only - that her every move is being traced. Two red-headed brothers, rifles across their backs, lurch close behind her: monstrous figures, identical in every way, with the predatory look of hyenas. She has murdered their brother, and their cold lust for vengeance is unswerving. As the widow scrambles to stay ahead of them, the burden of her existence disintegrates into a battle in which the dangers of her own mind become more menacing than the dangers of the night. Along the way, the steely outlaw encounters a changing cast of misfits and eccentrics. Some, like the recluse known as 'The Ridgerunner', provide a brief respite from her solitude; others, like the Reverend Bonnycastle, offer support only to reveal that they too have their own demons raging inside. As she is plunged further away from civilisation, her path from retribution to redemption slowly unfurls. A startling transformation of the classic western narrative, The Outlander is the haunting tale of one young woman's deliberate journey deep into the wild. : Review: 'A remarkable first novel, full of verve, beautifully written, and with all the panache of a great adventure' Michael Ondaatje 'From the outset, this atmospheric debut has a palpable air of menace ... With the breathless pace of an old-fashioned adventure story, and a supporting cast of mavericks, eccentrics and outcasts, this rich novel is packed full of drama' Daily Mail 'A superb adventure story' Kate Saunders, The Times 'Striking, thoughtful, full of unexpected twists, The Outlander is that rare delight: a novel that is beautifully written yet as gripping as any airport page-turner ... there are echoes of Cormac McCarthy. Hugely enjoyable ... A rattling good yarn' Guardian : Review: 'Striking, thoughtful, full of unexpected twists, The Outlander is...a novel that is beautifully written yet as gripping as any page-turner.' -- Size: 12.9 x 2.4 x 19.8 cm. 400 pages. Last Man in Tower
Atlantic Books, UK, 2011. First Edition, Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9781848875166 560 pages. Available Now. Book Description: Ask any Bombaywallah about Vishram Society - Tower A of the Vishram Co-operative Housing Society - and you will be told that it is unimpeachably pucca. Despite its location close to the airport, under the flight path of 747s and bordered by slums, it has been pucca for some fifty years. But Bombay has changed in half a century - not least its name - and the world in which Tower A was first built is giving way to a new city; a Mumbai of development and new money; of wealthy Indians returning with fortunes made abroad. When real estate developer Dharmen Shah offers to buy out the residents of Vishram Society, planning to use the site to build a luxury apartment complex, his offer is more than generous. Initially, though, not everyone wants to leave; many of the residents have lived in Vishram for years, many of them are no longer young. But none can benefit from the offer unless all agree to sell. As tensions rise among the once civil neighbours, one by one those who oppose the offer give way to the majority, until only one man stands in Shah's way: Masterji, a retired schoolteacher, once the most respected man in the building. Shah is a dangerous man to refuse, but as the demolition deadline looms, Masterji's neighbours - friends who have become enemies, acquaintances turned co-conspirators - may stop at nothing to score their payday. A suspense-filled story of money and power, luxury and deprivation; a rich tapestry peopled by unforgettable characters, not least of which is Bombay itself, Last Man in Tower opens up the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of a great city - ordinary people pushed to their limits in a place that knows none. : Review: 'Savage, sordid and ever so sad.... a dizzying portrait of Mumbai' --Sunday Telegraph: 'Dharmen Shah is a magnificent creation... This is a richly-evoked, Dickensian world that explores the chasm between rich and poor, the venal and the incorruptible... All human life - and longing - is here. Marvellous stuff.' --Sebastian Shakespeare,Tatler: 'This is a very fine novel, wonderfully rich in detail and the evocation of everyday life... It has a range, ambition and humanity which one rarely finds in contemporary British or US fiction: further evidence that the true successors of the European novelists of the 19th century are now to be found in the Indian sub-continent and the Arab world.' --Allan Massie, The Scotsman Allan Massie, The Scotsman: 'Adiga's always engaging, ultimately disturbing and tragic novel... limpid, witty and addictive... Adiga is like Dickens or any novelist who sees things politicians, big businessmen and others cannot see and do not want us to see' : --Alan Taylor, Herald: 'As well paced as any crime story but so much more. Every one of the huge cast of characters is brilliantly drawn. I am aghast with admiration. There is no one writing fiction as good as this in Britain or America.' --AN Wilson: 'Adiga's writing is rich and lush... The scope, in this novel teeming with life and skulduggery, is indeed Dickensian, although the characterisation is anything but. Dicken's painted heroes and villains; Adiga's characters are bundles of moral ambivalence... He is a writer who is evocative, entertaining and angry.' --Daily Telegraph: 'This is what makes Last Man in Tower as honest a book as it is entertaining: funny and engaging as he can be, Adiga never forgets the seriousness of his subject, or the general corruption.' --The Times: 'Last Man in Tower retains The White Tiger's dynamism and adds some of the finesse of Between the Assassinations... Dominating the narrative is Mumbai itself, once again one of the mightiest cities on earth... Adiga lays out this most frenetic of megalopolises before us, by turns fascinating, sensual and horrifying, as his writing takes an impressive step onwards.' --Independent: 'Last Man in Tower has a broader and more forgiving feel than The White Tiger, incorporating a gentler comic tone that finds affection as well as despair poking fun at its characters' pretensions and frailties... In this complex and multi-layered novel, he continues his project of shining a light on the changing face of India, bringing us a picture that is as compelling as it is complex to decipher.' : --Guardian : Review: Extraordinary and brilliant... Adiga is a real writer - that is to say, someone who forges an original voice and vision. (The Sunday Times) --This text refers to the Audio CD edition. Size: 15.6 x 3.7 x 23.4 cm. 560 pages.
