[William Russell]:
The History of Modern Europe: with an account of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, and a view of the progress of society from the rise of the Modern Kingdoms to the Peace of Paris in 1763 (4 volumes).
London: Longman, Brown & co (etc), 1842. New edition, complete in four hardback volumes, continued to the accession of Queen Victoria of England. 8vo (22cm by 15cm), xl, 653pp; xxxv, 633pp; xxxv, 713pp; xxxii, 760pp. This set was bound in a fabulous polished calf binding, with gilt tooling and contrasting title labels to the spine, but sadly the bindings have not stood the test of time, and the joints of each volume are cracked (with several boards detached), and the upper board of volume 1 is missing. There is also foxing to the preliminary pages of each volume. Apart from this foxing, the text blocks are clean and tightly bound, ans this would be suitable as a reading, working, reference or binding set.
