BIRUTE M F GALDIKAS
Reflections of Eden
Little, Brown & Co, Boston, MA, 1995, 1st Ed 1st Pr. Hardbound. Reflections of Eden by Birute M F Galdikas. Published by Little, Brown & Co, Boston, MA, 1995. 1st Edition1st Printing. Hardbound in Glassine Protected DJ. Size 8vo (up to 9-1/2'' tall). Condition: Nr Fine in Good DJ. Discarded Library Book. 408 Pgs. ISBN 0316301817. LCCN 93-22948. My Years with the Orangutans of Borneo. From the first, it was an adventure. In 1971, at age twenty-five, the author left the placid world of American academia for the remote jungles of Indonesian Borneo. Living with her husband in a primitive camp, she became surrogate mother to a ''family'' of ex-captive orangutans - and gradually adjusted to the blood-sucking leeches, swarms of carnivorous insects, and constant humidity that rotted her belongings in the first year. Her first son spent the early years of his life at Camp Leakey with adopted orangutans as his only playmates. The wild orangutans the author studied and the ex-captives she rehabilitated became an extended family of characters no less vivid than her human companions. Throatpouch, a huge and irritable grouch, fought off rivals for the right to claim adolescent Priscilla as his mate. Handsome Cara at first tried to rid the forest of its human intruder by hurling dead branches at her from the canopy above. Little Sugito, rescued from a cramped cage and returned to the jungle claimed her as his mother and clung to her fiercely, night and day, for months. A groundbreaking chronicler of the orangutans' life cycle, the author also describes the threats that increasingly menace them: the battles with poachers and loggers, the illicit trade in infant orangutans, the frustrations of official bureaucracy. Her story is a rare combination of personal epiphany, crucial scientific discovery, and international impact - a life of human and environmental challenge. CLEVELAND AMORY
Man Kind? Our Incredible War on Wildlife
Harper & Row, New York, NY, 1974, 1st Ed. Hardbound. Man Kind? Our Incredible War on Wildlife by Cleveland Amory. Published by Harper & Row, New York, NY, 1974. 1st Edition. Hardbound, Paper DJ. Size 8vo (up to 9-1/2'' tall). Condition: Nr Fine in Chipped DJ. 372 Pgs. ISBN 0060100923. LCCN 76-181605. A book written after indefatigable research and with rare humor, which varies from light satire to how, searing irony, the author describes man playing God for his own self-serving purposes, for, as the three parts of the book indicated, fun, money, and revenge. The book begins with the saga of the Hunt-the-Hunters Hunt Club - and ends with a truly touching look at what is obviously the author's favorite of all the creatures of the wild. Names are named here and intimate stories told, from those the author calls ''Big Shot'' Teddy Roosevelt to ''whaler-dealer'' Aristotle Onassis. Animal societies too are named, and their stories told, including the societies whose idea of ''conservation'' is to sell more guns and ammunitions. You will be fascinated by this book; at the same time, when you put it down, you will be angry. And you will never feel the same again about an animal head on the wall, a fur coat on you back, or the howl of coyote down the canyon. Description text copyright 2006 BooksForComfort. Item ID 11121. Every year countless millions of animals leave the areas in which they have lived for many month and embark on hazardous journeys to new regions, returning to their original homes the following spring. This is the classical image of migration. But the tem can equally be applied to the displacement of the spores and seeds of plants and to the dispersal, emigration, nomadic movement and explorations or animals, including man. This book explains why and how life migrates and also introduces new theories of migration. Description text copyright 2010 BooksForComfort. Item ID 22116. ISBN: 0670502863. Nr Fine in Good DJ. 4to..
