BRIDGES, A.F.B.
In the Service of Nigeria. Monograph No. 2 of the Nigerian Field. The International Field Studies Journal of West Africa
(The Nigerian Field Society: December 1980). . 245 x 183 mm; card wrappers; pp. 64; black-and-white photographs. Wrappers slightly curled and creased; a little scattered foxing. "Frank Bridges founded the Nigerian Field Society in 1930; The Nigerian Field was first published in 1931 under his editorship. Frank was born in 1895 in Shahpur, Punjab and entered the Navy in 1912 with the title of 'Assistant Clerk' on £45 p.a. Like many of his time he grew up on Kipling, Henty and the Boy's Own Paper and in the old-fashioned atmosphere of patriotic fervour, discipline and service which marked the hey-day of the British Empire. In 1918 he applied for service in Nigeria and indeed spent his entire working life in the service of the people of Nigeria. It is a great privilege to be able to publish this moving personal account of the life of a colonial administrator - not the memoirs of Governors - but of the man in the bush, the true backbone of the Colonial Service, which laid the foundation for modern NIgeria." (From introduction).

CALDWELL, JOHN C.
African Rural-Urban Migration: The Movement to Ghana's Towns
(New York, Columbia University Press, 1969). . Dustwrapper, partly and slightly stained, black cloth, pp. xi + 257 + (1), tables. 'In the fast-growing populations of the developing tropics, rural areas are no longer able to absorb the vast increases in their populations. In Ghana the result is striking-over a quarter of the population now lives in the towns. This book sets out to examine the kinds of people migrating to the towns, the effect of their migration on the rural areas they leave and the urban areas they adopt, their methods of travel and of solvig the problems of accommodation and work, their degree of satisfaction with town life, the numbers returning to the village, and their reasons for doing so. It thus discusses whether and when a truly urban population is created. Those specialising in any branch of the social sciences, and also the layman with an interest in the way tropical African countries are developing, will welcome information to be found here.'.

HASTINGS, A. C. G.
The Voyage of the Dayspring. Being the Journal of the Late Sir John Hawley Glover, R.N. , G.C. M.G. , Together with Some Account of the Expedition Up the Niger River in 1857

Cloth slightly stippled; moderate foxing throughout. Good condition. (Hess & Coger 7055) 'Nigeria is a country that has come very much into the public eye of late years, and very little of its early history is known. Therefore I have decided to publish a journal written by my late husband, Sir John Hawley Glover, when he was a very young man, which describes the Nigeria of that day. Lieutenant Glover, as he then was, left England with the "Baikie" Expedition, as it was called, for the purpose of making an official survey of the Niger, and his work for the British Government was to be the foundation for the charts and maps of that unknown and extensive valley. The attention of the scientific world was being directed just then to the Niger by the Royal Geographical Society, more particularly by Sir Roderick Murchison, the President, who urged the Government to undertake the surveys. The Earl of Clarendon - who was the head of the Foreign Department - therefore decided to despatch an expedition, of which the scientific head was Dr. Baikie and the surveyor, Lieutenant Glover.' - From the Introduction by Lady Glover..
